Va. State Sen. Ticer Calling It Quits
NBC ^ | 17 Feb 2011 | JULIE CAREY

A longtime northern Virginia political figure has decided to calls it quits.

In an emotional speech on the Virginia Senate floor, Alexandria Democrat Patsy Ticer told her colleagues, "I have finally come to the end of the line."

Ticer's 30th senate district covers Alexandria and parts of Arlington and Fairfax counties. She's been a fixture in local politics since 1982 when she was first elected to Alexandria's City Council. She became the city's first female mayor in 1991 and held that position until she was elected to the state Senate in 1995.

As Alexandria mayor, Ticer helped lead the high profile fight against former Redskins owner Jack Kent Cooke's efforts to build a stadium at Potomac Yard. In the Senate, she was known as a strong advocate for children, education funding and women's rights.

Ticer was a honored today with a standing ovation from her colleagues. She acknowledged it will be strange stepping away from elective office after three decades.

"It's hard for me to imagine what my life will be like not being in public office, but I look forward to this new challenge," she said.

There will be fierce competition for Ticer's seat in the solidly Democratic district. Delegate Adam Ebbin, Alexandria Councilman Rob Krupicka and Arlington School Board Chairman Libby Garvey have announced their intent to run for the Democratic nomination if Ticer retired.

Any hope that the Dems might lose this seat?

It’s not fun anymore for a Dem, when the legislature ceases to be a big candy store.

This is in the heart of the district that sends anti-semite Jim Moran back to Congress every two years. Redistricting might shift some things, but this is probably not a pick up.

There are others though, and the GOP should be able to take back the Senate this fall.

That calls true for any big government elected official. It cannot be more pointed out by John Kyl announcing his retirement from the U.S. Senate.

Combined with redistricting, it is going to be a very interesting and lonnnnng election cycle.

Delegate Adam Ebbin, Alexandria Councilman Rob Krupicka and Arlington School Board Chairman Libby Garvey

Of the three listed here, which one is most likely to succeed?

Republicans need to vet and run viable candidates for every seat possible for 2012.

This means finding conservative and republican candidates who are fiscal conservatives and who can defend their conservative principles and values in an intelligent manner.

More dem seats are up than republican ones and all of those seats should be targets for republicans.

Republicans will need to run very good campaigns in order to win those seats and I believe they can with the right candidates.

‘she was known as a strong advocate for children, education funding and women’s rights’

Doesn’t Big Media always ascribe the most altruistic motivation to EVERY Dem? Too bad it’s just window dressing. If they really cared about ‘the children’ they wouldn’t be Socialists.

She sees the writing on the wall and knows that the razor thin majority the Rats have in the Senate is gone this November. VA is not a fun place to be a Democrat or liberal today and I love it.

Sen. Ticer is a nice, professional and courteous person. Easy to work with. And a full blown liberal.

This is a Democrat seat. No ifs, ands or buts.

“nice, professional and courteous” That is impossible...she is a loser asshat LIB. If anything, she presents as this as a ploy. It is sort of like the mooslim taqayia (lieing to your enemies). This is merely a ruse to fool you into being civil to her or listening to any garbage that comes out of her LIB/moonbat mouth. NEVER EVER believe anything the America-destroying LIBs tell you. Don’t be naive...that is what got us to this point.

All liberals are evil and must be sterilized without exceptions.

Without an incumbent, these precincts will likely be pilfered by adjacent libs. I think they need to lose one seat inside the beltway. That should help the good guys in the outer burbs.

“Strong advocate of children, education funding and women`s rights”

Translated: “Supports government intrusion on family matters, specifically marxist indoctrination of children; and backs taxpayer-funded abortion on demand.”

NO, this mean finding conservatives who are full fledged conservatives, not strictly “fiscal conservatives”.

Losing any seat held by a DemRat is a big gain—unless replaced by a more toxic Dem which then the majority of people in that district deserve the rotten outcome.

I am hoping a Republican can pick up this seat, even though this is the People’s Republic of Northern Virginia
