Birtherism: Worst. Trap. Ever.
Washington comPost ^ | February 19, 2011 | Adam Serwer

For the past couple of weeks, I've been writing about Republican politicians' birther problem.

Whether or not the issue is one of mere symbolic belief or genuine agreement among large segments of the Republican base, GOP leaders feel obligated to mollify those among their base who believe the outlandish conspiracy theory that president wasn't born in the United States or that he's secretly a Muslim. But now former President George W. Bush adviser Karl Rove has come up with a new conspiracy theory that is less dumb than the original one, but not by much. According to Rove, the White House wants Republicans to continue raising doubts about Obama's citizenship in order to make the GOP look kooky:

[Snip]

The problem, of course, is that at least one recent poll showed that a majority of Republicans have doubts about the president's citizenship, which explains the rise of "post-birtherism." Republican leaders don't want to anger a large section of their base by flatly calling this stuff what it is, which is nuts. So the new approach is to joke about it or to carefully avoid denouncing the idea completely.

[Snip]

The idea that the issue is a "trap" is belied by the ease with which Republican leaders could shut the entire matter down. All they have to do is say it's silly.

If Pub leaders would just say it's "silly" to believe the Wee Wee is not natural born, then you stupid Freepers would "shut down" and believe the Hawaii governor

Not at all an outlandish theory; we may have already had a Canadian president, Chester Aurthur. But the certificate quest probably is a trap in that Bammy’s minions have had years to forge both the paper and the background records.

There seems to be an inordinate number of stories warning Birthers that they are wasting their time. Sounds like the media is getting worried about something. So much for concept of investigative reporting.

Even when other important events - like the mess going on in Wisconsin are in the news - the MSM always seems to pick that time to thrown in another "birther" story.

Almost proves the point that the left and the MSM just use it as a distraction from what they are actually up to.

If there is something to the BC thing, it will eventually surface - there are just too many people looking for it to keep it hid forever.

We were almost to the point of hearing nothing about it until Hawaii's newest grandstanding, ex-hippy governor needed some extra attention and announced to the world he was going to solve the problem once and for all...and he flopped. He fell right into the "birthers'" hands and show there was no BC in Hawaii.

I think we should do it like taking a bone from a dog...as long as you try to get it, he sits on it with all four paws, snarling and daring you to take it...but, if you're patient, and act disinterested, he'll drop his guard and you can snatch it away when he's not looking.

Obama did say one people "treat me like a dog", didn't he?

Several have tried, and they're just labeled "RINOs," even Sarah Palin.

National politicians WILL be demonized if they say anyhthing like, “ well yeah, an original BC with doctor signatures and baby footprints is the only legitimate BC in Hawaii”.

Best to say nothing and let individual States pass laws that force Presidential candidates to prove conclusively they are natural born citizens.

This is so bizarre. They act like it’s our fault that bozo has produced zero documentation of his life, starting with it’s beginning.
It’s like he is the one person in the world that must be blindly trusted and never questioned.
If you question him you are either a racist or a nut.
I think anyone running for president must answer the questions and back up their answers.
There is just too much at stake.

The Obama spin machine has slyly made the location of his birth the issue.

So that Conservatives who question his eligibility can be portrayed as “kooks” if he was really born in Hawaii.

But as we know, the real issue is the citizenship of his father. This issue is never brought up, but it’s essential.

And a secondary issue is his history, school records, passport records, voting records, etc. These are never brought up either because of the birth location thing.

I wish we could find a way to overcome this.

I see absolutely nothing "silly" about demanding that a candidate for the Presidency of the United States show proof of his citizenship prior to his name be entered on the ballot. The silliness and shame of all of this is in not having demanded this proof in the first place.

We in this country have become a nation of "weak sisters" who are frightened to death of challenging people who transgress in this manner and set out, from the very beginning, to game the system. WAKE THE HELL UP, AMERICA!!!

“It is silly.”

Maybe, but please explain why he’s spent over a million dollars to prevent his long form BC from being produced.

Stephonopolous and David Gregory are going bonkers trying to shut down the inquiry.

Obviously, we’re on to something.
