The Rich, the Famous, the Armed

Emily Berl for The New York Times
Shooting targets at the West Side Pistol Range, in Manhattan.

MEN and women. Democrats and Republicans. Doctors, lawyers, merchants and moguls. A remarkable, if relatively small, cross-section of New Yorkers legally own handguns, according to public records...

Among the more than 37,000 people licensed to have a handgun in the city are dozens of boldface names and public figures: prominent business leaders, elected officials, celebrities, journalists, judges and lawyers.

Some expressed pride in their gun ownership, like the renowned divorce lawyer Raoul Felder, who readily posed with his .38-caliber Smith & Wesson... And there were a few conflicted souls, like Alexis Stewart, co-host of “Whatever With Alexis and Jennifer” on SiriusXM radio and the Hallmark Channel.

“I don’t believe people should be allowed to have guns in America,” Ms. Stewart, daughter of Martha, said in an interview, explaining that she bought a .357 Magnum after 9/11 — but would be happy to give it up if handguns were banned. “Having a swimming pool is way more dangerous than having a gun,” she added.

Getting a handgun legally in New York is a two-step process. First, applicants must obtain a license, which costs $340, takes about 12 weeks to process, is good for three years and requires a background check by the New York Police Department. In addition, fingerprinting costs about $100.

The 41,164 handguns registered with the Police Department as of Jan. 14 include those owned by more than 2,400 people who live outside the city... — people like Roger E. Ailes, the president of Fox News, whose license lists an address in New Jersey; John J. Mack, the chairman of Morgan Stanley, who lives in Westchester County; and Sean Hannity, the conservative talk-show host, who lives on Long Island.

When I lived in NYC and had a carry (19 years with carry) I used to shoot at the pistol range above.

Conflicted? How about I use the same garbagethink, Alexis, to suggest we put your mom back in jail for trading stocks?

My guess is, since you don't respect the right, you'll screw up and use it against someone unthreatening and unarmed, and then you and your mom can enjoy a cell together...

From what I learned years back when I gave a crap...

Firearms concealed carry registration when sorted by profession, excluding those associated with law enforcement peoples, was:

1. Lawyers

2. MD’s

3. Psychiatrists

There is a theme here; guess what it is and get a prize.

An unarmed civilian is a victim of thugs and of THUGS,
THUGS #1 your friendly politician and liberal soft heads
THUG #2 The ones armed illegally that THUGS#2 have no control over, won’t do anything about or can’t do anything about so they take the path of the least resistant, you!

“There is a theme here; guess what it is and get a prize.”

They are very well off professionals who can afford it?

They are either lawyers or are in highly regulated professions who are know how to “work” the system or have staff that can do it for them?

8 million people live there....and yet only 37,000 are given the privilege to exercise a right that predates the Constitution and is guaranteed by it. Disgusting.

True but you forgot to factor in the 100,000 or so thugs that have a gun despite the “gun laws.”

So how does she feel about banning swimming pools?

YEs indeed... condemning someone with a bullet is the speck. The log in the eye is giving blessings to criminals to go against that soft tissue unimpeded... hmmm shades of rapists and homosexuality, perhaps.

We are fast becoming a rationalizing self-vulnerabilizing society of liberal homos. It’s disgusting.

These people know that the “have-nots” aren’t going to go quietly. Also, as layoffs hit police departments nationwide, the protection supplied by the middle class (via property taxes and actual bodies) for the “haves” is being eliminated. In the northeast this is critical, because while our policemen were ordered to stand down years ago because of the number of blacks shot/beaten/arrested/incarcerated, they were still allowed to threaten perps by shaping their fingers like pistols and shouting “bang, bang!”; now even that protection is gone because the “safety officers” are being laid off.

While crime is up in many northeastern suburbs, the mob knows where the bling is, and the rich should be armed to the teeth with weapons and the lawyers they’ll need if they use them...

They all know the criminal element well since their business surrounds them with such. That, and crazy people and they are smart.

Yes, guns to defend themselves and lawyers to get them off. We need ot be able to defend ourselves, although to be frank, the thought of the mob storming LA where the entertainment libs are is funny. With 2012 coming up, to be frank we need to be armed since blacks will riot, one way or another.

That was my first question after reading this celebrity airhead's statement. And what does one have to do with the other anyway? A complete non sequitir.

She has the brains of a hamster. A dumb hamster.

This isn’t a black issue; there are many Latinos and whites who can clearly see the very dim future in store for them. The “haves” in NYC have nothing but contempt for anyone else (see the proposed “congestion pricing” to keep the unwashed out of lower Manhattan during the time the “haves” need to run their errands); they really are from another planet. They can fight the Arabs alone if they want their island to themselves...

““The first guy comes out with a sawed-off shotgun, goes right by me and says, ‘Be cool, man,’ ” said Mr. Catsimatidis, who has owned a gun for at least 35 years. “The second guy comes out with a sawed-off shotgun, goes by me and says, ‘Be cool, man.’ The third guy comes out with a sawed-off shotgun, and I intertwine my arm into his arm, and I put my gun to his head, and I say, ‘Drop your gun, or I’ll blow your head off.’ ”

When the police arrived, they arrested the man, and examined Mr. Catsimatidis’s weapon — a Walther PPK/S 9-millimeter pistol.

“The sergeant says to me, ‘You couldn’t have shot the guy anyway: your safety is still on,’ ” Mr. Catsimatidis recalled. “The sweat started dripping off my head.

“I’m not going to do anything stupid like that again.” “

I guess a safety isn’t a two way switch. Once taken off, it can’t be put back on. /sarc

I see more 1968 than 1966. All the Communists. You might be surprised that many young whites will be on that side, more mature black people on this. Look if the election is close for Network News say “The people are speaking.” just as they have in the Middle East, where 250,000 rioters turn a nation of 80 million.
