With Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker maintaining a hard line on his budget bill and Democratic senators refusing to return to Madison to vote, attention is turning to a group of moderate Republican senators to negotiate a compromise to the stalemate that has drawn thousands of protesters to the state capital for a sixth straight day.
The proposal, written by Sen. Dale Schultz and first floated in the Republican caucus early last week, calls for most collective bargaining rights of public employee unions to be eliminated per Mr. Walker's bill but then reinstated in 2013, said Mr. Schultzs's chief of staff Todd Allbaugh.
"Dale is committed to find a way to preserve collective bargaining in the future," said Mr. Allbaugh in a telephone interview.
On Sunday Mr. Walker reiterated his confidence that Republicans would pass their proposal intact.
"We're willing to take this as long as it takes because in the end we're doing the right thing for Wisconsin," Mr. Walker said during an interview with Fox News on Sunday.
Mr. Schultz was first elected to the state senate in 1991 and was the Republican majority leader in 2005 and 2006. He earned a reputation for working across party lines and was endorsed in his 2010 re-election bid by the state's largest teacher's employee. He won with nearly 65 percent of the vote.

Proof once again, that RINOs are more deadly than CommieCrates - they will backstab you at the most crucial moment!
Onward Operation RINO Kill (politically speaking, of course)!
Quisling is always with us.
Vote out all RINOs, they are nothing but democraps that registered Republican!
What is it in these RINOs that compel them to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory? Fear of success?
Governor Walker must win this fight. There will be 49 more battles like this in this country. If the socialist unions win in Wisconsin, they will be emboldened (with a tested plan of action) in all of them.
The dhims probably have photos of Sgt, er Sen. Schultz dressed in his Nazi helmet and underwear getting spanked by his mistress...
Hey, he’s obviously a RINO so use your imagination.
You’re as rotten as that Senator!
Jeez, I detest RINOs almost as much as I detest liberals. If the Rats won’t show up, the Republicans STILL have a constitutional quorum and will only need 10 votes to pass a law. Tell the RINOs to grow a freaking pair!
Took 0bummer long enough to make his calls.
Stuff it moderates.
the bill WAS a compromise. The other option was to fire 12k public workers
Fire all of the teachers that were striking. Tell the kids you will have teachers that support you and we will give you as much time off as Obamalama ding-dong allows.
Aw here we go!
I can already hear MSNBC gloating!
You’re never going to reign in the Unions by giving them most of what they want.
The Democrats in hiding NEED TO BE DRAGGED IN! They are NOT doing their jobs!
So there you have it: a handful of thugs can drag the rest of us around by the reproductive organs if they so choose.
I guess we can expect the union apes to come protest everywhere now - and why not, it works?
Nashville has a Parthenon. He is more than welcome to get his ass kicked in Athens sister city.
Imagine the campaign money he will get from unions and individual teachers.
Yep, ‘moderates’ by definition have a visceral dislike for conflict. They are by nature folks that just don’t believe in anything much especially politics unless it involves a direct pecuniary interest. (How many ‘moderate Rino’s are real estate agents, insurance and investment agents or small town lawyers. These people live and die by not ‘offending’ people and being known as ‘nice fellows’.) These ‘nice fellows cannot and do not want to grasp the notion that politics is frequently war without much shooting. Watch their faces blanch in a public meeting when anyone gets really fired up and watch them sit idly by and let other party members be slandered by dimrats. They just hate c9onflict and want a comfortable life and they will betray you. you living. thier children’s future and pretty much anything to have one. These people also rally don’t like Palin and think Limbaugh is ‘a doper and to loud’.
Will these GOPers also supply the rope to lynch Gov.Walker? What a waste. Unions win, O wins.
EFF the RINOS.
Obamas thugs are getting to the weaker Senators, with bribes or threats.
The 16 absntees of the Seate have violated their oaths of office. A complaint should be files against them and t sould be heard. This would be in a joint session of the legislature or in the Supreme Court.
The 16 should then be censured, their seats forfeited, and immediate byy electuos shouold be held. I bet that out of the 16 abset, only 5 pr 6 Dems would be returned to office.
Walker has to play hard ball, and thats just it.
No Compromise!!
Don't you get it??? We want strong opposition, not pansies that give way when the going gets tough! Yeesh!
