San Francisco May Ban Infant Circumcision
NBC Bay Area ^ | 02/22/2011 | Matt Baume

Posted on 02/22/2011 7:00:57 AM PST by SeekAndFind

Self-described "civil rights advocates" say that a ballot proposition to ban circumcision is on track for gathering signatures, meaning that San Franciscans may vote on the measure this November.

The proposed law is being spearheaded by local resident Lloyd Schofield, according to the San Francisco Examiner.

It's part of a national push to end the procedure, which some say is steeped in tradition but poses risks and has little medical benefit. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Medical Association do not recommend routine circumcision.

Getting on the ballot is the easy part -- only about 7,000 signatures are required. Once it's there, advocates will have to convince voters that snipping off body parts is a bad idea.

Although some studies indicate that circumcision reduces the risk of STD transmission, others have indicated that the procedure is not worth the associated risks and diminished sexual function.

Several Jewish organizations have weighed in against the ban as well, pointing out that circumcision rituals play an important historical role for many Jews. Schofeld counters that under his proposed law, adults would be free to opt-in to circumcision, but infants would not be allowed to have the procedure until they reach 18.

Just like the Euro-peons. Next thing you’ll see is a ban on kosher slaughter of animals.

I may be wrong, but I think circumcision is no longer covered by Medi-Cal(Calif's Medi-Caid).
This is pure idiocy ,as usual for the likes of SF.
Some kids return to the hospital after circ.with infections, some are permanently damaged because of circ.,some come into the hosp because they have infections because they aren't circumcised. It was only within the past year that there was some type of uproar about the American Pediatric Society willing to perform “a modified female circumcision”to prevent the damages incurred by the practice.I have heard no more of that insane proposal.

It’s OK to stab them in the back of the head with scissors and suck their brains out though.

sheesh

And I would think San Fran would be OK with body modification

‘which some say is steeped in tradition but poses risks and has little medical benefit”

Who are the ‘some’ who say it?

The tradition? Christian.

That’s what it’s really about.

What part of this do you not understand?

Ah traditions! perhaps the jewish religion should contemplate ending this
“tradition” as it most surely is a form of genital mutilation...the basis for the “tradition” is what? where in religious writings does god say to cut a male infant’s foreskin?...isn’t it a tradition born out of hygene, not religious text or dogma?

In this day and age, it is not a “hygene” thing...your pediatrician makes sure to advise you on how to lift your foreskin to assure proper cleaning when in the shower! At least my son’s pediatrician reviewed this with him on several yearly visits. It is a hygene thing for men in countries that have no running water and substandard sanitary conditions all around!

We opted not to have our son circumcised. Our Pediatrician at the time in NJ said their practice was split about 50/50. When we moved to Ohio, his doctor said un-circumcised boys were very rare. Both confirmed it was not medically necessary - just tradition.

From wikipedia:
Jewish law states that circumcision is a ‘mitzva aseh (”positive commandment” to perform an act) and is obligatory for Jewish-born males and for non-circumcised Jewish male converts. It is only postponed or abrogated in the case of threat to the life or health of the child. It is usually performed by a mohel on the eighth day after birth in a ceremony called a Brit milah (or Bris milah, colloquially simply bris), which means “Covenant of circumcision” in Hebrew.

Apparently our first amendment means nothing. The Liberals know best and they have decided that the whole Judaism thing is just silly. San Francisco shall be Juden Frei.””””

Not a word about preventing Muslims who live in the USA from doing genital mutilation on their women & girls.

This is just plain wrong. It is an attack on Jewish people in the USA.

I'd recommend you be mindful of your tone on FR. You're new as of less than a month ago, and this sort of comment will get you the ZOT.

That being said, tradition is all we have to stand on in the way of the rise of secular humanism. Tradition is why the Catholic church has stood in the way of allowing Priests to marry for over 2000 years. Tradition is why America has been a God-fearing, Christian nation of prosperity and worth for over 200 years. Tradition is necessary to faith, or we lose our identity.

What you call "genital mutilation" is something embraced by most of the civilized world.

My wife and I decided our son would be. Our obstetrician did it a day or so after birth— a chip off the chip off the old block.

We were discussing it with a nurse, who told us that babies do not experience pain during the procedure— at least the traumatic pain some claim.

As to the “good hygiene” argument, we may have plenty of water to wash in now, but there are no guarantees of anything in his future.

It’s more of the stigma. I remember hearing a story from a buddy of mine in college who had a son. They decided not to circumcise him, and as he got older, as most parents let their kids do, he would shower with his dad and ask why his daddy’s “pee pee” looked different.

When they decided against circumcision, it hadn’t occurred to my buddy that those sort of things would come up, and at the time of the “incident,” he was stumped as to how to answer. Do you tell your kid, “Because you’re different?”

As for me, I’m Catholic, and that’s just how it’s always been. My fiancee agrees that our boys will be snipped, no questions asked.

Genesis 17
The Covenant of Circumcision
1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty[a]; walk before me faithfully and be blameless. 2 Then I will make my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers.”

3 Abram fell facedown, and God said to him, 4 “As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations. 5 No longer will you be called Abram[b]; your name will be Abraham,[c] for I have made you a father of many nations. 6 I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you. 7 I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you. 8 The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God.”

9 Then God said to Abraham, “As for you, you must keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you for the generations to come. 10 This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised. 11 You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you. 12 For the generations to come every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised, including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner—those who are not your offspring. 13 Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised. My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant. 14 Any uncircumcised male, who has not been circumcised in the flesh, will be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant.”

15 God also said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah. 16 I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.”

17 Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?” 18 And Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael might live under your blessing!”

19 Then God said, “Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac.[d] I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him. 20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers. He will be the father of twelve rulers, and I will make him into a great nation. 21 But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you by this time next year.” 22 When he had finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him.

23 On that very day Abraham took his son Ishmael and all those born in his household or bought with his money, every male in his household, and circumcised them, as God told him. 24 Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised, 25 and his son Ishmael was thirteen; 26 Abraham and his son Ishmael were both circumcised on that very day. 27 And every male in Abraham’s household, including those born in his household or bought from a foreigner, was circumcised with him.

This is a really round about way of evicting Jews and some other groups from San Francisco; thus ensuring San Francisco’s radical purity.

No. God is quite unambiguous in the Old Testament about the issue. It is not a “tradition” for observant Jews but a requirement. It is optional for Christians.

Whether circumcision was required of Gentile converts to Christianity was a fairly big issue among first Century Christians.
