Well, as a fellow Marxist and Muslim, Qaddafi was a natural ally for Louis Farrakhan and Obama's "spiritual mentor" Jeremiah Wright - I'm dispensing here with the pretence that Wright and his church are Christian in any meaningful sense. They established a long-term relationship with the dictator that began with a visit to Libya in the early 1980s. There is little doubt that Obama would have seen Qaddafi as an important ally of the leftist / Muslim movement in America.
You're probably aware that Qaddafi supported Obama's campaign, and recently referred to Obama as both a Muslim and a friend.
Also worth noting is that Qaddafi provided funding for the construction of the national center of the Nation of Islam on the South Side of Chicago, not far from Obama's future home. In the mid-1980s, Qaddafi offered $1 billion to help Farrakhan develop a political lobby in America. A Nation of Islam member reported that Qaddafi wanted to create a black revolution in America. Meanwhile, Farrakhan was giving speeches in a series of countries hostile to the US, saying "God will destroy America through the hands of the Muslims." That's the same Farrakhan who, lest we forget, called Obama "a herald of the Messiah."
Given all this, it is no surprise that Obama was reluctant to denounce his long-time compatriot and benefactor just because he ordered the murders of a few hundred citizens in the defense of his regime.
