The 19 Republican members of the Senate Thursday gave preliminary approval to a state law requiring a photo ID to vote.
All 14 Democratic senators were absent, continuing their weeklong exodus to Illinois to avoid taking a vote on Gov. Scott Walker's public worker union rights curtailment.
The measure, which is strongly opposed by many Democrats, was hailed by Republicans as a commonsense method of ensuring fair elections. Democrats have argued that incidents of voter fraud are very rare and the ID requirement would curb voting by minorities and others.
"Not a single voter in this state will be disenfranchised by the ID law," said Sen. Mary Lazich (R-New Berlin). Republicans adopted revisions to the original version so that several forms of ID would be acceptable, including driver's licenses, state ID cards, passports and tribal IDs.
Student IDs would not be allowed under the version given preliminary approval. Lazich said Republicans wanted to set standards for student IDs before agreeing to allow them.
The new version also provides a grace period until next January before the requirement is enforced. Voters at spring elections without photo IDs will be given brochures explaining the new requirement but would be allowed to vote.
Senators could not vote final approval on the bill because it has a cost and fiscal bills require at least 20 senators to be present.
Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald implored Democratic senators to return to the Capitol so the voter ID and other measures can be completed. If the final vote isn't taken in the next couple of weeks, it will cost the state more because a separate educational outreach beyond the spring elections explaining the law would be needed, Lazich said.
Step by step... inch by inch...
This is great.
DOJ will step in next to “declare” it unconstitutional.
how about voting by mail? Is there any extra security measure there? Physically going to a vote booth and voting somewhat reduces the fraud because theres only so many times a person can physically vote a day. Voting by mail makes fraud alot easier
OK, how about a bill making this the law next:
(1) Participation in a government employee union in any capacity other than as a rank-and-file member is participation in a criminal organization punishable by fine of all payments received from that union and 1 to 5 years in prison.
(2) Receipt of campaign contributions from a government employee union is public corruption punishable by fine of up to three times the contributions and 1 to 5 years in prison.
(3) Participating in or assisting a government employee union giving campaign contributions to any candidate or political party or group is public corruption punishable by 1 to 5 years in prison.
Sure we can come up with more. Question is, can the Republican Senators in WI do so, and do they have the guts to go there?
“The 19 Republican members”???
Uh... the word you’re working for is “majority”, guys.
The MAJORITY of the Senate voted for the bill.
At the bottom appeared to be a reference to the Federal law (it was way too small to read). This struck me a bit odd, you can't get your mail w/o an ID, but an ID for voting is discriminatory against the poor?
how about just stating, no state agency or official, either directly or indirectly, shall collect or distribute or cause to be distributed any union dues.
Interestingly enough, Wisconsin and Indiana are in the same federal judicial circuit. The 7th Circuit Court of Appeals has already upheld the Constitutionality of the Indiana law, so the forces of evil may be screwed.
Mail in ballots are elementally intolerable.
I believe Egregious organized voter fraud should be a capital offense. It is basically political assassination because it undermines the very confidence in the system that allows people to act in a civilized manner to pick their leaders.Once that presupposition is gone then the entire system breaks down.
Voter id, absentee ballots must be notarized, cleaning up the voter rolls, etc. are common sense requirements to insure a fair vote. The reason the Dems don't want a fair vote, is they know they will lose every time.
