The regime is doomed. Qaddafi’s secret police goons and mercenaries won’t be able to save his rapidly crumbling dictatorship.

It could be all over by Sunday.

The best we can hope for now is that whoever succeeds Gaddafi isn’t an islamist.

If they took the air base this is HUGE. Won’t be long then before it’s a done deal...but then there of course is the aftermath...as one Libyan said...”Who would have thought we’d find ourselves rebuilding our country from kids on the interenet.”

.Gadhafi militia open fire on Libya protesters

BENGHAZI, Libya – Militias loyal to Moammar Gadhafi opened fire on protesters streaming out of mosques in the Libyan capital on Friday, demanding the regime’s ouster, witnesses said, reporting at least four killed. Across rebellious cities in the east, tens of thousands held rallies in support of the first Tripoli protests in days.

Protesters chanting for Gadhafi’s ouster streamed out of mosques near downtown Tripoli’s Green Square and other districts after prayers, and they were confronted by troops and militiamen who opened fire, said several witnesses. Gunmen on rooftops in streets near the square shot down on marchers, they said.

One witness reported seeing three protesters killed in the Souq al-Jomaa area near the square, and another reported a fourth death in another district, Fashloum. The reports could not be immediately confirmed.

“There are all kind of bullets,” said one protester near the Souq al-Jomaa, screaming in a telephone call to The Associated Press, with the rattle of shots audible in the background.

“The situation is chaotic in parts of Tripoli now,” said another witness, who was among marchers in adjacent Algeria Square and said he saw militiamen firing in the air. Armed Gadhafi supporters were also speeding through some streets in vehicles, he said. Residents hiding in their homes also reported the sound of gunfire in other parts of the capital.

Haha. While I will hope and pray for that, I see no chance of that not happening.

If they want to end the regime, they’ll first have to FIND Gaddafi. He’s probably in a better hidey-hole than Saddam was.
He is likely also guarded by fierce loyalists.

I also think he’ll eat a gun before being taken. It’s probably better than what the crowd may do to him if they get their hands on him. Think “Mussolini”.

The army will probably take over from Qaddafi. But writing a democratic constitution is a tall order for a nation that has never known democracy.

Qaddafi apparently misread the import of the Tunisian and Egyptian revolutions and thought he could ride out the storm. It turned out to be a fatal miscalculation.

Once people stopped being afraid, the tide turned despite all the power the state had on its side against an unarmed population.

And the feeling for people is an exhilarating one. They never thought this day would come. The dictator turned out to be no match for them.

No, in the middle east so long as two men draw breath there will always be another battle.

But this will probably be the last one for Qaddafi Duck.

Islamo fascism is just around the corner. Many of these young Liberals will probably wish Qaddafi was still in power before it is all said and one.

His mercenaries and goons are just enraging people and spurring them on. It reminds me of Iran in my youth, when the Shah’s army tried to put down protests all over the country. They mothballed and within a few months, the Shah was gone. We are seeing the same scenes now in Libya. Qaddafi will either commit suicide or be shot like Ceausescu. The end of his bloody regime will be a bloody one.

Anyone keeping track of the threat vectors that Khadaffy has spent 4 decades winnowing out...?
