Bachmann to Democrats: Don't tell Americans what light bulbs to buy
CBS ^ | 3/2/11 | Brian Montopoli

Posted on 03/02/2011 8:35:27 PM PST by pissant

Minnesota Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann on Tuesday reintroduced the "Light Bulb Freedom of Choice Act," a bill to repeal a 2007 law mandating that incandescent light bulbs be phased out.

"The government has no business telling an individual what kind of light bulb to buy," she said in a news release Wednesday. "In 2007, Congress overstepped its bounds by mandating that only 'energy efficient' light bulbs may be sold after January 1, 2012. This mandate has sweeping effects on American families and businesses and needs serious consideration before taking effect."

Bachmann says the mandate should only stay in place is (1) there is proof that alternate bulbs save consumers money, (2) there is proof that alternate bulbs significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions and (3) that it's shown that alternate bulbs "would not lead to a health risk for consumers, particularly those in hospitals, schools, day care centers and nursing homes."

The bill isn't the first "nanny state" critique to come from Bachmann, who said with regard to the IRS making breast pumps eligible for tax breaks: "To think that government has to go out and buy my breast pump - you want to talk about nanny state, I think we just got a new definition."

GO MICHELLE!!! What a great woman she is! I hope the repeal of this stupid florescant light bulb mandate takes place immediately. I hope there are enough Repubs with balls like Michelle is showing!

And of course, this was passed and signed into law in 2007 when....oh yah, that's right the dumb ass panderer-in-chief GW Bush signed this POS legislation into law. GW Bush never had an unkind word to say about demoRATs or muzzlims or illegals, but he sure loved to publicly criticize & villify conservatives. GW Bush...the RINO dumb ass who keeps on giving!

I hope Michelle is successful in getting this reversed as well as any other intrusive nanny gubmint mandates. We gotta take our country back from the socialist rat bastard commie pig demoRATs & RINOs!

Restraint of trade, it’s a conspiracy I tell ya.

Yes, I like Michele B. too.

Infact, Palin/Bachmann 2012 wouldn’t be half bad.

Let the womins do it.

And ask anyone that won’t vote for this if they would allow their children to play in a windowless, finished basement where one of these bulbs broke.

Notice how there is very minimum noise from both left and right (besides Bachmann)?

As a previous poster said:

CFL = 400%+ profit margin
Incandescent = “non green” low margin high velocity dependent item

So now the companies producing CFL’s can make more money and advertise about how green they are in the process!

And the kicker for all the conspiracy people out there, notice how there is nothing about businesses requiring the use of CFLs? Next time you go to your local mall, take a look at the number of CFLs in each retail store (not the general mall area). I bet you can go through the whole mall and count less than 10 CFLs.

Our government, bought and paid for.

I keep thinking the simple light bulb is the perfect symbol for the 2012 elections. It symbolizes inventiveness, good ideas, government intrusion into private lives, torch of freedom, etc. etc.

Next I want to see the Full Flush Toilet Restoration Act, the Inhalers With CFCs Restoration Act, the Washing Machines That Use Enough Water to Get Clothes Clean Without Beating Them to Death Restoration Act, the Dishwasher Detergent With Phospates Restoration Act, the Drill for Oil and Gas Wherever the Heck it is Economically Feasible to Do So Restoration Act, and the Only Gasoline Without Ethanol Will Be Sold Restoration Act.

Thank you!

God Bless her. I hope this issue gets changed.

Where is common sense? The new bulbs are full of mercury and they are crap.

May I add to the third paragraph:

(4)There is no need for three pages of small print from the EPA detailing the procedures you must follow should you accidentally break a bulb.

I think the key word is PROOF.

Great. Who determines what constitutes "proof"? And why would it be OK to keep the ban even if such "proof" were real?

I think she’s making it too complicated. How ‘bout:

The ban on the manufacturing, selling and using incandescent light bulbs is hereby rescinded.

BUMP! to Pining_4_TX for #27. Now we’re talking!

I love Michelle too, but she really stepped in it on this one. The standards she spelled out cannot be allowed to justify the federal government banning something. Even if a more efficient technology is invented and it produces less emissions, it is not the federal government’s place to ban the older product or force people to buy the newer one. Any such legislation should be the prerogative of the states, if they want to spend their time and taxpayers’ money on it. Where is this power enumerated for the federal government?

“hauling a big bag of them to a “designated recycling point” without breaking at least one is a challenge.”

Oh, aren’t you the worrier! Don’t be concerned. Our leaders will fix that... with heavy fines and jail time if you break one.

There, now don’t you feel better?
