Stocks Plunge As Gas Prices Jump Again: Up 17 Cents Overnight in N.J.

Oil prices around the world continued to soar today, buffeted by uncertainty in the Middle East. Crude oil futures hovered above $103 a barrel in New York this morning. In London trading, oil headed for its sixth weekly gain, according to Bloomberg News.

An oil facility in Libya was reportedly damaged and on fire, the Al Jazeera news channel reported today. Meanwhile, demonstrators continued to protest in Saudi Arabia, demanding the release of Shiite prisoners, according to CNN.

In the United States, how much pain at the pump drivers feel may depend on three factors: location, location, and location. In Orlando, Fla., two gas stations that are the closest to the airport, and across the street from each other, are selling regular at $5.29 and $5.19 a gallon.

Overnight the price gasoline went up 17 cents along the New Jersey Turnpike. This morning drivers saw the price jump from $3.08 yesterday to $3.25 today.

After the biggest one-week rise in oil prices in two years, weekly gas prices increased 6 percent this week, according to the Department of Energy. The national average is $3.38 per gallon, an increase of 19 cents over the previous week and 68 cents from the previous year. The average price in California, one of the most expensive states, is $3.72 per gallon. The least expensive gas is in the Rocky Mountain region: $3.18 a gallon.

I told my DH that by summer we will be going NO WHERE that we cannot get to my bike.

He has a V-Max for the commute. We have good old fashioned three speed touring bikes.

Price gouging by the oil companies. Hell, it had to get to 140 a barrel before it got much over 4 dollars last time.

It’s crazy how prices are all over the place.

Never seen a jump in gas prices like this before, except when Jimma Carter was president. But that was an oil embargo - a totally different situation.

0bama would have preferred a more gradual increase...

NOT Bull Crap - just selective reporting. I have no doubts that gas stations in certain locations (especially near airports where rental car business is driving the price).

The difference is in taxes and EPA regulations on refiners.

Maybe they meant $3.29, but $5.29 in Florida while California isn’t even over $4? That should raise red flags across the board. Orlando is only 80 miles away from a huge oil importer here in Tampa. And if it IS true, then the State needs to investigate price gouging. That’s complete crap.

Yes Price Gouging. How could it be over $5.00 in those two gas stations and under $4.00 elsewhere? So it is price gouging.

Given the airport location of those two stations, I'm guessing they're maybe the only close-in option for refilling rental cars right before returning 'em.

It's always been that way around LAX.

There’s NO WAY it’s over $5 in Orlando.

I don't know what the price of gas is in Orlando, but note that the story said that the stations were across the street from the airport. Gas stations near airports almost always charge more than other stations because they take advantage of people returning rental cars. It would not surprise me if these two stations were significantly above other stations in Orlando.

There’s NO WAY it’s over $5 in Orlando. That’s a misprint. It’s only $3.50 here in Tampa.

This gas station in Orlando, and for the past year another idiot across the street from him, has charged anywhere from $1 - $2 a gallon higher than any other station in the area and has done so since it opened 8 years or so ago. Taking advantage of being across the street from Hertz. Neither station advertises their prices out front.

If you are visiting Orlando and are on 436 just north of the airport, drive a few more blocks north and get gas at "normal" prices.

Baloney. If you look up the taxes on google, you will see that the state, local and federal taxes on that gallon of gas are far higher than the “profit” the company is making. Some gas stations in Arizona have been putting all the tax amounts on the pumps to show people where the money is going.
