A steam explosion from an overstressed pipe is possible...

That's also my uneducated guess, but we'll have to wait for on-site reports to know for sure.

Could be many possibilities. Don’t jujp yet. Let’s all wait for Jack Lemon and Jane Fonda to report the hype in the sequel to “China Syndrome”. Except China is sideways from Japan.....

Then what else would explode?......

back up generator or transformer overload..could be a fuel storage tank heated up.

Lots of equipent at a nuke plant capable of exploding, fuel tanks for generators, secondary pressurized vessels, large electrical components, etc. I am frankly surpised to hear talk of a meltdown, as more modern designs account pretty well for loss of coolant accidents (LOCA). Routine subject matter for drills here. Maybe an older plant?

Certainly don’t want to jump to conclusions, but it’s hard to see an explosion as a positive thing. This is very serious.

I'm not fluent in current Japanese designs. I hope the box is sturdy enough. If the structure fails, all bets are off. Some run-off is inevitable though IMO.

possible scenario:

Meltdown is not an explosion risk per se, but an atmospheric release risk. Explosions almost certainly are in the secondary.
