http://www.world-nuclear-news.org/RS_Explosion_rocks_third_Fukushima_reactor_1402111.html

World Nuclear News (experts) posted the following:

- Initial analysis is that the containment structure remains intact

- Pressure readouts from the period after the explosion were within a relatively normal range: 380 kPa at 11.13 and 360 kPa at 11.55am. These compare with comfortable levels yesterday of 250 kPa, reference levels of 400 kPa, and a high of 840 kPa recorded at unit 1 on 12 March.

- Radiation readings on site remained low after the blast, albeit elevated from normal operation. In the service hall the reading was 50 microSieverts per hour. At the entrance to the plant the figure was 20 microSieverts per hour.

“I’m erring on the side of caution...”

I agree!

You know, the level of criticism here of anyone who dares question the safety of these plants is starting to annoy me.

You’ve denigrated other Freepers several times here. Your use of the term ‘macho’ and ‘nuclear arm chair warriors’ is offensive and uncalled for. It only shows your fear of the unknown has disengaged your brain.

". . . the maximum radiation dose received was equal to the amount of natural background radiation one would receive in one month from sources such as rocks, soil and the sun."

Anyone have any idea of how that compares to the dose of radiation in any medical or dental x-ray?

Do you have your basement filled with food and water? How about an air filtration system to filter out the radioactive particles? You will need an air exchanger in your basement with good filters.

What will you do with your waste if water is unavailable? Do you have enough tarps to seal your windows? Duct tape?
How many weeks of stored water do you have? Have enough vitamins for your family stocked up? Hand crank radio or two in case one doesn’t work?

An obscene dereliction of duty to allow the ship into the area BEFORE monitoring for radiation.

Good reading on the engineering design of these reactors can be found at http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/2688108/posts

This is an in-depth review of the design by a MIT nuclear expert, but easy to read.

I was refering to that Russian sub which was saved by a brave sailor who manually pulled the rods out and died.

Dental xrays (full mouth) - .15 mSv
Lower GI x-ray - 4.060 mSv
Cosmic radiation - .510 mSv
Earth radiation - 3.0 mSv

Why would you position one of your most valued assets right over a few days old 9.0 fault line?

I don't know for a fact, but I'd imagine that an aircraft carrier afloat over a 9.0 earthquake probably wouldn't experience much more than a little extra bobbing.

I could be wrong, of course.

Hussein wouldn’t even announce the name of the ship going there. Now he can report that RR is retreating. Win-win for Hussein and his anti-Americans!

First - The Russians are not the example of how to handle anything related to nuclear.

Second - You don’t pull control rods out to stop the reaction, you put them in.

The only Russian sub I am aware of that was almost lost to nuke problems was one that had a coolant leak. Which one are you referring to.

A chest x-ray gives you about 30 millirem (old fashioned units). The natural background in my area is about 0.02 mrem/hr, so in 30 days I get about 14 millirem. So they were getting about this much per hour, or one x-ray every two hours.

That much isn't harmful, the trouble is, exposure is cumulative. If they had remained in the plume for a long time they might experience measurable effects. Changes in blood counts start at about 10 rems. Macroscopic effects start around 200-250 rem (nausea, hair loss). LD50/60 for humans without medical intervention is about 450 rem. So they were not close to that, but my guess is they wished to avoid any unnecessary exposure, so they moved away from the plume. A reasonable way to handle things, on balance.

Perhaps. But remember, they purposefully vented some hot gas the other day.

"An obscene dereliction of duty to allow the ship into the area BEFORE monitoring for radiation."

Not at all. This is a NUCLEAR POWERED CARRIER. They monitor radiation ALL THE TIME. Radiation detectors are built in to the vessel, and as another poster stated, they have mechanisms to actually operate in a high-radiation environment (as would likely be the case if there was a war).

So your "concern" is unwarranted.
