Fox news saying they left the plant
Goron is so dumb, if you offered his speaking fee, he’d p-robably rush right over and give a speech ...
Contacting Karl Rove:
Initiate Operation SNOW. Initiate Operation SNOW. Fire up the weather machine now.
The heart beats a monotonous languor,...the heart beats a monotonous languor....
I'm not sure why we should ditch nuclear power over the failure of a 40-year-old, obsolete reactor, already at the end of its designed lifespan, which was unwisely situated on a coastline known for violent tsunamis. We can build much safer ones now, and site them out of harm's way.
Didn’t all those helicopter crews die from radiation poisoning?
Thank you. I am certain that with the radiation issues they're dealing with, they'll be rotating personnel more rapidly now. They've GOT to cover those pools with water.
Someone mentioned robotics - that's a good idea.
"Lame...."
I think so but I think they were military.
So much for a “Three Mile Island” conclusion!
Praying.
I understand that there are multiple levels of complexity, but it just seems so ironic that you have nuclear plants next to the sea, in an area that was just overrun by a Tsunami, but there isn't enough water to prevent the spent fuel from combusting.
“Twitter is saying its the #3 reactor, thats the Plutonium one.”
Just great, that risks gamma emitters going into the atmosphere. It could be going into full meltdown. GE’s engineering acumen will have to save the day or not in containing the molten core from spilling into the environment.
“This kills nuclear energy in this country for the forseeable future. No amount of reasoned arguments will overcome this and any politician who tries will be committing career suicide. I doubt even Rushs intellectual power. will be able to turn the tide.
I don’t know if it kills nuclear energy, but it does reveal that there were not adequate redundant cooling systems built into that reactor. It’s 40 years old. Perhaps the new designs are better. But all designs now need to be reviewed for safety.”
The new reactors will not burn down,The Pebble beds solve that problem.
We’re going to be reading a lot about the ritual of seppuku over all of this, I fear.
They can be exposed and melted, if the containment buildings are still intact (not the buildings that exploded above containment). I had heard that one was cracked and leaking. Have you heard anything new?
The bad thing about exposed fuel is gamma radiation plowing through the air and buildings and hitting anyone close. It could be that they couldn’t save the damaged fuel and so they have fallen back a safe distance to figure out the next plan.
I am trying not to fall for the hysteria. I know it makes good news, and I am sure everyone with experience in the industry, but not with inside knowledge of what is going on, is having doubts because of the relentless media hysterics. I know I am. It would be nice to really know what is going on, but I doubt we will get it first from CNN, FOX or MSNBC. They just want ratings.
Twitter? Let’s hope it’s not #3
1. Brings in sheets of lead (lead walls) for workers to work behind.
2. Bring in robots to do some of the work.
3. Bring in generators so that water pumps can be operated. Make sure they can get wet and still operate.
4. Bring in fire hoses and cameras to that any exposed rods can be constantly sprayed with water.
5. Bring in special suits (like space suits) to shield workers from radiation.
6. Have Plans A, B, C, D, and E ready to Rock 'n Roll.
What happened with Apollo 13 was that NASA focused on the problem and came up solutions in a very timely fashion.
The same can be done here.
Actually, they do. The question is whether they are able to do enough to regain control over the situation or not. The plant workers are behind the curve by a long shot right now.
The biggest problem we have, still, is that the news media is melting down. They are not able to report with any degree of accuracy, partly because information to the public is scarce, and partly because they have their own agenda.
In a meltdown - the floor of the containment would hold for what? Twenty four hours?
