Nuclear Problem In Japan: Is Obama Partly Responsible?
The Market Ticker ^ | March 17, 2011 | Karl Denninger

Posted on 03/17/2011 5:25:57 PM PDT by an amused spectator

From the BBC:

2226: The Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper, quoting a senior official of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan, said the US made the offer immediately after the disaster damaged Fukushima No 1 nuclear plant. According to the unnamed senior official, US support was based on dismantling the troubled reactors run by Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) some 250 km (155 miles) northeast of Tokyo. However, the government and TEPCO thought the cooling system could be restored by themselves, the report said.

Am I reading this right?

Our government demanded that the Japanese dismantle - that is, permanently remove - over five gigawatts of power in order to help them with a critical safety problem that had the potential to destroy 100 square miles of land and kill or injure thousands of people?

That as compensation for helping them we demanded that they cripple their electrical generating capacity on a permanent basis?

You have to be kidding me.

This is an extremely serious charge.  If it's true it stands alone as grounds for impeachment and dismembering every single federal agency involved.

Perhaps this explains why the US Military and/or civilian authorities didn't stick a couple of big-ass generators on a transport plane and get them over there, restoring power to the reactors within hours of the incident and avoiding all of the serious radiation and physical damage at the plant.

This allegation is ridiculously incendiary and demands an immediate and complete Congressional investigation.  Not only do the citizens of the United States deserve to know the truth (or falsity) of this charge (and who initiated it if it is false), but so do the Japanese people.

If this is how this man treats our friends - attempting to use a crisis threatening the lives of civilians to score a political point and advance his "green" agenda.....

I’m stunned.

He’s crapped on Poland, UK, Israel, Egypt, a South American ally, and now, if this is true, Japan. We will not have one single country in the world who will trust us when he’s done. If there are any left, now.

This needs to be investigated. There needs to be a group of Democrat and Republican Senators go into the oval office and tell him he’s resigning or they will spill every bean they have on him.

The US offer was apparently contingent on conditions from US Greenies in the Obobblehead administration, who wanted the reactors shut down permanently, which was also reported by The Yomiuri Shimbun.

I thought the US did provide generators, but they were not compatible with Japanese equipment. Is this article saying that was not the case? If he did do this, it just doesn’t surprise me as serious as it is. Has he gone Blago? That is, he’s so used to pulling this kind of crap that he doesn’t think there something wrong with it anymore, or that nobody’s watching or listening or cares?

Here we go: Google machine translation from the Japanese needs some help. A Google popup appears asking for a better translation. Can a Freeper fluent in Japanese follow the link and provide a better translation?

Could that be a crime?

You tell me.

Poor choices and taste by this administration, sure; as usual.

But how is it impeachable? I don't see much in the Constitution about being obligated with no strings to help another nation.

Look, I'm not defending the guy, but anymore anyone and everyone is dropping the "impeachment" rhetoric for something they feel is egregious and frankly this site is looking a bit kook for it.

Well, jeez! In all of Japan, a country with 56 nuclear reactors, there was no possibility to beg, borrow, steal, dismantle or cannibalize a few stinking generators that have the same connections, that could have been hung from choppers and dropped into a clear space in the plant's yard?

They couldn't have beached a ship off the shore and run lines from it to the reactor plants?Heck, they could have flown the danged things from the states over to there in 12 hrs if necessary.

We're not talking about having to move the world here. We're talking about having to get enough power to get those water pumps back online so that they didn't have to spend the next 8-10 years in a radioactive cleanup. And where are the now? At the very start of an 8-10 year cleanup.

I've had all kinds of people tell me why it couldn't be done and hey, I'll grant you that I'm only a computer guy and not an engineer, but we're not talking about an engineering problem here. We're talking about a power problem here.

I think that it's a shame that the two most technologically advanced countries in the world, BAR NONE, allowed this to happen because they couldn't between the 2 of them, come up with an original solution.

It's disgraceful.

That makes it even worse. I keep hearing this incompatible connector complaint and I'm getting tired of it.

I thought engineers were supposed to be genius's at mechanics. All of the engineers at Tepco, GE, US and Jap govs couldn't figure out how to splice in a bypasses that would allow electricity to flow from the generator to the pump until a more permanent solution could be come up with???

I guess I must be simplifying things by a factor of a million cause I can't see where it was an impossibile thing. Difficult yes, but impossible????
