Touchdown: B-2 Stealth Jets Return After Epic 11,500 Mile Journey To Bomb Libyan Aircraft Shelters
Daily Mail ^ | March 21, 2011 | By Richard Hartley-parkinson

Six hero pilots return home safe and sound from a bombing mission to Libya which saw them in the cockpit for an incredible 25 hours.

Three B-2 Spirit bombers, piloted by two men each, made it back after the 11,418-mile round trip from the Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri - where they are kept in special hangars - to Libya, where they hit targets on forces loyal to Colonel Gaddafi and back again.

At $2.1bn, they are the most expensive warplanes in the world and rarely leave their climate-controlled hangars. But when it does, the B-2 bomber makes a spectacularly effective start to a war - including during this weekend's aerial attack on Libya's air defences.

The B2s take out the anti-aircraft artillery and the air defense radars for surface to air missiles. Then the F-15s and F-18s can go in with far less risk.

I was of the opinion that we should let them fight it out and then kill the winner.

Everything has limitations. Even heros. Can someone clarify what potty facilities might be aboard these planes??

Inquiring minds can be burdensome, at times.

They would be heroes if they had refused the mission.

These are military pilots. They took an oath to follow all lawful orders given by lawful superiors.

Further, the military is under total control of the US civilian government.

Whether or not you "think" or are of the opinion that the orders given these pilots were "unlawful" makes no difference.

But...in order to vent your spleen, may I suggest you replace the current crop of civilians in control with other civilians more to your liking.

In that manner, the orders given to the military by their civilian leaders will be much more to your liking.

However, until that occurs....gripe all you want about the incredibly inept, unprofessional, and immoral civilian leaders now in office (and in charge of the military), and try as hard as you can to support the very folk you put in harm's way.

I agree with the first part of your statement and feel that given the chance, the winner would eventually give us a proper reason to do just that.

Aircraft shelters don’t move, right?

Is using a B-2 cheaper than cruise missiles or are we running low on the Tomahawks already?

Not sure about the “facilities” on them..During the the Iraq war the crews had to buy folding aluminum chase lounges from Walmart. They would take turns “streaching out behind the flight crew stations. They’d fold ‘em up and bungee cord them to the bulkhead during the attack phase of the mission . The missions were 44+ hours if i recall

Good grief....

Did I accidentally click on Democratic Underground?!?!?

Just listen to all of you... WTF?!?!?

This was a readiness capabilities test, just showing to the world (aka China) that these beasts can do such an act.

Now imagine all 20 of them leaving Whitman AFB for points in NK or China with nukes, if the time come...

Keeping these guys and gals sharp is far more important than any political agenda... Obama won;t be president forever...

Ya’ll need to stop acting like whiny Democrats....

The pilots may be honorable, but the guy who ordered them to bomb Libya is a vile pr!ck.

I couldn't tell you how many Tomahawks we have, but the round trip of the B2’s was cheaper that a couple of those I'm sure. However, a B-2 is overkill for this and a very odd choice IMO. We have plenty of aircraft in Europe and on ships that could do this. Shoot, bring in some B-52 and use them.

But I am still of the opinion we needed to let this rebellion run its course. Mubarak is gone in Egypt and now Coptic Christians are being slaughtered.
