This is becoming a huge headache for McCaskill. Right now, the likely Republican field is second-tier (Ann Wagner, Sarah Steelman, and Todd Akin), but this helps them immensely.

You forgot about Martin. And how exactly is Akin second-tier?

I disagree those are second-tier candidates (except for perhaps Wagner). I saw polling showing Steelman apparently leading for the nomination, but the big problem she faces is a visceral opposition from the MO GOP establishment. An ugly GOP primary is the only saving grace for McCaskill at this point.

I don’t think that’s a second tier field, personally. Steelman has won statewide office and narrowly lost the GOP governor primary to Kenny Hulshof. Todd Akin is a respected congressman from the wealthy west county St. Louis suburbs. Ann Wagner is a former chairman of the Missouri GOP. All good choices, IMO. I really like Akin a lot - he’s a conservative’s conservative.
