Islamist Group Is Rising Force in a New Egypt
NY Times ^ | March 24, 2011 | Michael Slackman

CAIRO — In post-revolutionary Egypt, where hope and confusion collide in the daily struggle to build a new nation, religion has emerged as a powerful political force, following an uprising that was based on secular ideals. The Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist group once banned by the state, is at the forefront, transformed into a tacit partner with the military government that many fear will thwart fundamental changes.

It is also clear that the young, educated secular activists who initially propelled the nonideological revolution are no longer the driving political force — at least not at the moment.

As the best organized and most extensive opposition movement in Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood was expected to have an edge in the contest for influence. But what surprises many is its link to a military that vilified it.

“There is evidence the Brotherhood struck some kind of a deal with the military early on,” said Elijah Zarwan, a senior analyst with the International Crisis Group. “It makes sense if you are the military — you want stability and people off the street. The Brotherhood is one address where you can go to get 100,000 people off the street.”

There is a battle consuming Egypt about the direction of its revolution, and the military council that is now running the country is sending contradictory signals. On Wednesday, the council endorsed a plan to outlaw demonstrations and sit-ins. Then, a few hours later, the public prosecutor announced that the former interior minister and other security officials would be charged in the killings of hundreds during the protests.

Where have all the flowers gone?

Long time passing

Where have all the flowers gone?

Long time ago

Where have all the flowers gone?

Girls have picked them every one

When will they ever learn?

When will they ever learn?

WHERE HAVE ALL THE FLOWERS GONE

Only to NYSlimes is this news or a surprise!!

Anyone with half a brain saw this coming. And the same will happen to Libya and Yemen and elsewhere these so-called “democratic” revolutions are taking place.

We are all worried,” said Amr Koura, 55, a television producer, reflecting the opinions of the secular minority.

So the secular minority is worried, the Coptic Christians are worried, but Obama knew what he was doing to toss Mubarak under the bus?

Obama's sure we're backing the right people in Libya, right? Gaddafi's son says we'll regret having backed the wrong side if the rebels win. We've seen the press talk to Libyan rebels who went to Iraq to attack the Americans. My confidence in this president's handling of foreign policy has reached a new low.

They are shocked! Shocked! that Islamization is going on in Egypt. Wait ‘til they get the news about Tunisia, Libya, Syria etc. Looks like their mythic Arab Spring was rained out by old men in beards.

Think about it, he won’t lift a finger for the middle east, but bring the African continent into it and . . . .

"We need to elect a very conservative President and Congress on November 6, 2012 if our Sacred Republic is going to survive. Even then, it's going to be a long fight."

I honestly don't think we have that long before it all blows up. It has taken what, three months for the power base of North Africa to flip?

The West is guilty of willful blindness and or abject stupidity.

Either way Egypt is heading for Islamist hell.

Yes, and now Beck had the video of this Lerner guy talking about an uproar here in May. November 6, 2012 seems a long way off. . .

Art,

By the grace of God, we found out about this Lerner character and can deal with him in whatever means he hopes to pull of his mad-hatter scheme. What has my antenna tingling is what is happening in and around the Med. Yamamoto knew the folly of trying to take on this country in a shooting war.

Isn’t it amazing leftists are so emboldened by the Post Turtle attaining office that their arrogance will be their undoing, not by the government, but by the good people all over this country. Only liberals and progressives believe the economy is a zero-sum game. Let them have their game, we are not playing on the same board.

Wonder what happens with the large amount of foreign aid we have sent and continue to send to fund the army.

The NYT wakes up to the fact that it's not a Facebook revolution anymore.

The “world's best journalists” finally notice.

Also notice that the editors of the Times can't quite bring themselves to name the Muslim Brotherhood in the title of the article.

That really would be asking too much.

The smug stupidity of these people is really astonishing.
