How about Saddam Hussein's Ba'athist government removed in Iraq -- at a cost of thousands of U.S. lives and hundreds of billions of our tax dollars.

I mean, do you really think the U.S. would have had any interest in a decades-long military campaign against Iraq if the Saudis didn't need protection?

obastard wanted what’s happening in Libya to happen, IMO. He just didn’t want to appear to lead it because of domestic political concerns. But now he’s the de facto leader of it.

Actually, the Saudis protested vocally against Saddam's removal. The Saudis know that they have US protection - whether they want it or not. Just as the US was not about to let either Hitler or Stalin own continental Europe (the predictable outcome if the US had stayed out of the European theater in WWII), the US will not allow a single power to own the entire Middle East's oil resources, whether that power comes in the form of the Soviet armies, Iran or Iraq. This has nothing to do with Saudi lobbying - it's basic strategy to prevent your adversaries from getting too powerful if their means of doing so is military conquest involving getting a stranglehold on a critical raw material like oil.

It was Bush who wanted to remove Saddam, out of a combination of motivations - I believe the undeclared ones included (1) Saddam tried to have the elder Bush killed, (2) we had unfinished business in Iraq, (3) Saddam may have had a hand in 9/11 that we could not prove, and (4) he never expected the tab to be this big, figuring that it would be a rerun of the Grenada or Panama invasions. It was in Iraq that Americans discovered - contrary to neo-conservative assumptions - inside every Iraqi is not an American struggling to get out. This is why the war has been long and expensive, relative to Bush's original assumptions.

Why didn't the Saudi Royal Family - like every other Sunni-run Arab government - want Saddam removed? Because they feared a democratic Shiite-controlled Iraq would be firmly in Iran's orbit.

That’s the thing, we have facilities in Manama (there at the port if I recall correctly) thats just outside of town...

There’s not much more to Bahrain than that...Back in the day the Navy only had the ASU (Alcohol Support Unit)...Now it is quite a complex...

With all the hoopla going on, you’d think someone would have said something, or maybe not, for a good reason, about our personnel stationed there...The Fleet can get out of dodge there pretty quick, but those land based personnel are kinda stuck...

I miss the days we could go to the Souk and buy $3 (1 Dinar) cassette tapes...Thats shows how far back I go over there...

It doesn’t matter. They all still fund terrorism.

the Iranians will have defacto rule of Bahrain and the 5th Fleet will be looking for a new home.

Isn't that the whole point?

The government of Massachusetts has come to the aid of the governor of Rhode Island.

The GCC will be preserved and Iranian intrigue will be thwarted

North Africa was mostly a French domain during colonial times

The french moved into north africa to subdue the Berbers and the associated Barbary Pirates who were essentially the purveyors of slaves to the entire muslim world. They would crash entire towns on the coasts of Italy to Iceland and take the entire town as slaves to be sold into the muslim world. Especially blonde/blues as they fetched the highest prices at auction.

Bigotry against the Saudi royals? They are scum and you are a naive fool. They are the leading exporters of Islam to the West and own loads of western politicians.

Try to lear how to spell bigotry next time when you are using Dem tactics to call people bigots and racists. There are more than a few incredibly naive TV watching idiots on FR like you.

Let em fight it out. They are the leading exporters of Islam to the West aka they are the ones behind the invasion.

They have been fighting for 1360 years. Get our kids out of there. they will still sell us their oil. Reagan got it right with the Shia and Sunni - he eff up giving the mujadeen (sp) too much help.

Hmmmm...Ahlul Bayt News Agency...

After a glance at their site and some of the other articles they've put on there, I believe I'll wait for a more reliable source to find out what's really going on in Bahrain.

These are Arab Shiaites. Culturally and racially they have very little to do with Persian Iranians.

The Iranians are involved in trying to take over Bahrain and have been before. It helps to do a little background study before posting.

I have actually lived in the middle east for almost a decade. I know what I am talking about. The Arab Shiites in the Arabian peninsula are an oppressed minority and culturally they have nothing to do with Iran.

Living somewhere does not automatically impart knowledge whereas research can actually be useful. The Iranians supported an uprising in Bahrain in the 70’s. You would actually have to use google to find that out rather than continue claiming living somewhere magically makes you smarter. But to each his own.
