Here is the latest AOL News report. At the time it was written Sirte was not yet taken, a fortified place 55 miles to the east of Sirte was considered a major obstacle. When the 2 oil towns were retaken by the rebels they found 20 handcuffed bodies of soldiers from the Firjan tribe. Aside from Qadaffi’s Qadaffadha(sp?) tribe in Sirte, the Firjan are also a large tribe that took part in the 1990’s uprising against him. A number were executed. There are 4 other tribes inside Sirte that will probably remain neutral. It looks like the taking of Sirte could be really messy.

“The question to me is, how long can the usurper back alqueda without admitting he is backing alqueda.”

We’ll see later today in his speech. He will spin it guaranteed.

I believe your statement could be viewed as accurate.

This charge is being led by USSOC (boots on the ground), just like the overthrow of the Taliban in early 2002.

No way this rag-tag group made those advances without help.

No way.

Problem is: Who the hell ARE those guys? AQ?

The window of opportunity to bring the moslums out of their 7th century dungeon should be shattered now. I would support boots on the ground if we had a President that believed in establishing “freedom of Religion” in these moslum countries. Instead whatever regime survives will mandate in its new Constitution that ‘NO LAW SHALL CONTRADICT ISLAM” .And since we are faced with a President who is wimpy....... Heck go in and kill Kadafi, who was and continues to be terrorist.....instead odumbi has us playing some sort of wack a mole. ........................................... ........Libya is an Iraq waiting to happen - but until we get a MacArthur in the White House who knows how to wage war and spread the American values that have made our vanquished enemies like Japan and Germany so strong - its better that it doesn’t.

I can't believe the whining on this thread.

Whether we needed to intervene or not is certainly a valid question. But Colonel Muammar al-Gaddafi indisputably has American blood on his hands, is a feckless dictator playing both sides of the game, and certainly has Al Qaeda contacts himself. He makes Mubarik look like Reagan. To h**l with him and any fool's stability he supposedly brings to the table. The idea that this intervention is motivated by some desire to install Al Qaeda in Libya is simply a rage-filled, paranoid fantasy of people who hate Obama so much they can't see straight.

I wouldn't have intervened here, but our armed forces are doing a very credible job against one of the world's true low lifes. Be proud of that and hope for the best.

No, Gaddafi has been a strong opponent of al Qaeda just like Mubarek was a strong foe of the Muslim Brotherhood. There's no way to spin it, Obama has taken the side of our Muslim enemies and has used the force of the US military to do it. The Muslim Brotherhood are now taking over Egypt and al Queda and there allies are taking over Libya.

Good work, Mr. President, good work.

Commandos are on the ground organizing, training, and directing the rebels

Taking names...photos and making lists....

Could be a ploy to flush out all the top A-Q leadership...

in preparation for a "night of the long knives."

Sure our Navy and Air Force are doing well. They are pros-the best in the world.

Please think about Iran(hostages),Lebanon( dead Marines)add Yemen(USS Cole),Somalia(mogidishu),etc.

Let’s not make Libya bigger then it is.

I think I saw a rebel tank on the news.

Will NATO destroy it and the twenty fighters on it?

Maybe in your fantasy world. Gaddafi is a low life weirdo who supported every terrorist group in existence for most of his reign and murdered Americans in Berlin and Lockerbie. He only made gestures after the Soviet Union fell and he was completely isolated. He has been playing the West for chumps ever since, basically getting off scot free for his many crimes against both the West and his neighbors. He gave up a completely lame weapons of mass destruction program in exchange for all kinds of goodies. He extorted US companies to pay the fine assigned for the Lockerbie bombing. And he has not given up his old ways. He voices support for the Somali pirates and does have Al Qaeda connections within his web of loser friends.

Comparing Mubarik to Gaddafi is a complete joke. Mubarik's people got tired of him, but Mubarik genuinely did advance US interests in the region. He was a good pawn. Gaddafi is a lunatic still playing both sides against the middle. Whatever comes after him, he's no loss at all.

I fought in a war some 50,000 Americans died in, so I certainly wouldn't make Libya out as a big deal. What I'm saying is that, rightly or wrongly, a situation has developed where a total loser who was never our friend even when he pretended to be has found himself in our cross hairs. So it's time to stop worrying about whether we should have done this or not. There's a good chance we can topple him, and there's a decent chance we get a new government that's at least not any worse than him. Best to simply hope for that rather than rail about pathetic fantasies of Gaddafi having been a true ally.

(Gaddafi) does have Al Qaeda connections within his web of loser friends.

Is this something you have factual support for, or is this just the way you "feel"?

I presume an al Queda and Muslim Brotherhood controlled Libya, that is a training ground for jihadists, will be to your liking.

So I guess you missed Gaddaffi giving an interview just last summer where he accused the US of genocide and said there was no Al Qaeda, that it was just a rumor to front US Imperialism? And I guess you missed him just two weeks ago threatening to make an alliance with Al Qaeda even as he was blaming them for the rebellion?

Yeah, he's Mubarik all right. And the Easter Bunny is Jesus, or hadn't you heard?

I´d say it´s pretty important to hash out once and for all what the President can and cannot do in terms of military action without congressional approval.

Also, getting some kind of consistent definition of “war” would also be useful.

In general, I think we intervene too much. I think it became a mind set during the Cold War that has lived on as a lazy habit after. Too often we seem to drift into these things more as mental reinforcement to envision ourselves as a super power than anything else.

Part of it may be that we simply have too many bases around the world. They’re like enablers to an alcoholic. If we had fewer bases concentrated IAW our major interests, it would be more difficult to just pick up and go anywhere. If it was enough of a pain, maybe we’d stop to ask whether it’s something we really have to do.
