Sweden plans to join Libya no-fly zone with fighter jets, but no ground attacks

STOCKHOLM — Sweden plans to send up to eight fighter jets to help enforce the U.N.-mandated no-fly zone over Libya after receiving a request for assistance from NATO, the prime minister said Tuesday.

Fredrik Reinfeldt, who leads Sweden's centre-right coalition government, said the JAS 39 Gripen planes cannot be used for attacking ground targets.

The Swedish offer also includes a transport plane and 130 personnel and will be made available for three months, Reinfeldt told lawmakers. The proposal needs approval from Parliament.

Veronika Wand-Danielsson, Sweden's ambassador to NATO, told AP that alliance chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen made an informal request last week to Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt about contributing

Thanks for the fighter support and all; but what do you suppose the pilot is supposed to do if the enemy shoots back and his plane crashes? Does he have enough cash on him to get a taxi?

He will pull a Blanche DuBois, and depend on the kindness of strangers. After all, he's Swedish, why would anybody want to hurt him/her?

Sweden is a lot like Switzerland, they maintained a very credible armed neutrality during the Twentieth Century. Both the Germans and Russians avoided conflict with them.
