Leonard Pitts Quiz on Religion attempt to blur the destinction of Christianity and Islam
Wichita Eagle ^

Posted on 03/29/2011 8:33:45 AM PDT by Machfour

OK, put your books away. We're having a pop quiz. Below are four quotes. Each is from one of two sources: the Bible or the Quran, although, just to make things interesting, there's also a chance all four are from one book. Two were edited for length, and one of those was also edited to remove a religion-specific reference. Your job: Identify the holy book of origin. Ready? Go:

*"... Wherever you encounter (nonbelievers), kill them, seize them, besiege them, wait for them at every lookout post...."

* "Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword."

* "If your very own brother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you love, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, 'Let us go and worship other gods'... do not yield to him or listen to him. Show him no pity. Do not spare him or shield him. You must certainly put him to death."

* "Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man."

All right, pens down. How did you do?

This is nothing more than a veiled attempt to blur the distinctions between Christianity and Islam and further erode the US as a Christian Nation.

Pulling verses out of context cheap and easy trick.I recognize each verse and understand it in context, I doubt most readers of the article would unless they were well versed in bible, OT and NT.

If nothing else, we can definitely say that Mr. Pitts’ eschatology and ecclesiology need some fixin’.

I too recognize all of them and know the context behind the Bible verses. It's a cheap trick to try to make the Bible look as bad as the vile koran.

Does Pitts know the answer? Doubtful. He probably pulled this off some website and forgot to print the answers.

Big problem is Koran is currently being followed to the letter by its followers. Not so with Bible.

Quran, Bible, Quran, Bible.

Didn't have to look.

But the last Bible quote (from OT) is out of context. And so is the first one, from Jesus.

Well I got all four right. I guess one year at a Christian school in 1970 (6th grade) now equals a degree in theology. At least in Mr Pitts’ world...........

One more question- guess which book

“For God So Loved the World that He gave His only begotten son...”

time’s up

If you chose “koran”, a lashing or death is on the way for even presuming that allah would stoop so low as to send a “son” in the form of a human pauper no less

Yes, there is a point here: I wish people would stop cherry-picking warlike quotes from the Quran to “prove” the evil of Islam.

Uhm, Ahole, the difference culture and intent.

Christianity seeks not to subjugate nor to dominate by force but rather by an act of one’s own volition - A choice of their free will.

Islam demands subjugation in so many ways and absolutely seeks to dominate the world - By Force.

Additionally, Christians en mass will condemn violence of any kind except as a right of self defense.

Islam, on the other hand, is given imprimatur and approval by all of Islam and their silence.

i read that yesterday- and one hting I can’t stand are lying sacks of crap like leonard- he calls himself a ‘christian’ yet time and time again attacks the christian faith in a public display of mindnumbing ignorance of the christian faith-

God’s directives were ONLY to the Jews durign a SPECIFIC period in time when He led them into the promissed land- they were NOT a directive to non jews, AND, they were directives that were inline with secular traditions of the time-

The Koran however directs muslims to kill EVERYONE who is not muslim- it encouraqges terrorism, and murder

The Israelities were called apart by God to be above reproach- to be holy, to keep themselves from sin, and to meet out punishments to those who within the tribe who turned their backs on God

now- for those hwo might have been confused by leonard’s ignorance of scriptures- old testament laws were meant to be obeyed by man for remissions of sins as it were- Christ had not come yet to die for everyone’s sins- the very law itself was to remind everyoen that man is condemned by sin, and God laid out very clearly what the law was, and what would happen if the law was broken- it was meant ONLY for the jews- the youths who were to be stoend were not simply kids committing minor sins- thwey were OUT OF CONTROL rebels who were a danger to peopel aroudn htem- crimionals- hell bent on bringign destruction to the nation of Israel- they weren’t simply ‘sassy teenagers’- they were folks who blatantly broke the law with NO regard for anyone else

Secondly, there is no evidence anywhere in scripture that the jews HAD to carry out htis sentance- God simply instructed the people as to what they SHOULD do IF they wished to reamin pure as a nation- God takes sin VERY seriously- we have so trivialized sin, and so trivialized God’s view of sin that today, we live in an almost ‘anythign goes’ society- and quite frankly, we ARE paying a VERY HEAVY PRICE for our indifference to sin and sinners- Most offenses simply resulted in the person being excommunicated from the society, but in some of the worst cases, Israel had to carry out them ost severe penalties- much like our own death sentances here in the states today-

The koran however makes NO distinctions about who should be killed - their’s is a blanket directive to kill anyone who iosn’t muslim- not for any offenses like in Israel’s case. the koran encourages murder- the bible encouraged punitive law no different than todays penal system

God NEVER instructed Israel to haphazzardly go about indiscriminantly killing whomever they liked simpyl because the peopel were of a different religion to them- He isntructed Israel to kill those who were wicked and wholly set agaisnt God when they entered the promissed land KNOWING full well that failure to do so would lead to Israel adopting impure attitudes and being corrupted as the years went by- He always fully knew that Israel woudl NOT obey the directive, and as a result, would suffer all her life for their mistake in wiping out a wicked and rebellious people as they were isntructed to do

The koran however isntructs muslims to kill anyone who isn’t muslim

oh, and just for the record- look for leonard pitts to read all the comments correcting him, and in a few day formulate an equally ignorant respionse to those critics who tried to elighten him on his errors- he ALWAYS whines about Christians who try to correct him after he posts an article villifying Christian with rhettoric which is devoid of biblical facts- I expect we’ll see his new article defending his ignorance on the subject in a few days

What a doofus!
Cherry picking indeed!

I got three out of four, but the comedy is in the basic premise : that Christianity's foundation is The Old Testament. Comparing the quran to the Old Testament was too tempting a target for an ignorant and woefully circumscribed mind. But identifying it as the Pentateuch would have destroyed the target this fool intended to attack : Christianity. The fool is unaware of the phrase "The New Covenant." I will allow educated and informed individuals to judge for themselves the fallacy in the attempt.

I am not a religious nut, and I never quote scripture to advance any argument about contemporary discussions about the abominable quran, nor of the behavior of muslims in the last millenium. The behavior of muslims speaks for itself.

I will not undertake the fool's errand of searching Christian or Jewish behavior in the last 200 years which would quote those passages while commiting atrocities, nor preached from a Jewish synagogue or Christian church, encouranging its members to commit atrocities.

That behavior is daily fare in mosques worldwide TODAY!

I could elaborate and list dozens (or hundreds) of examples of muslim barbarism in just the last 300 years. and none in the history of Jews and Christians.

That's it.
Rather than waste more of my time responding to an ignorant, probably pervert, fool, I suggest that he, and others who think he has an informed, cogent argument, read :

The Closed Circle, David Pryce-Jones
Jihad in the West, Paul Fregosi
What Went Wrong?, Bernard Lewis
Unholy Terror , John Schindler
History of the Ottoman Turks , Edward Creasy, (Joseph Von Hammer)
From Time Immemorial , Joan Peters
Alms for Jihad , J Millard Burr And Robert O Collins

If anyone hasn't read most of those, they have no standing to have an intelligent discussion on the subject.
Are you listening, you little worm, Lenny?

No, it’s Koran, Bible (NT), Bible (OT), Bible (OT)

Actually, the foundation of Christianity IS the Old Testament (do a close reading of the letter to the Hebrews). That relationship was settled in the struggle against Marcion and the other gnostic heresies that attempted to ditch the Old Testament God as a vengeful primitive unrespectable ‘particularist’ god of the Jews that no self-respecting non-Jew ‘in the know’ could take seriously.

“The behavior of muslims speaks for itself.”

Nothing “speaks for itself”. Everything is interpreted through some theoretical framework. A sentient being from the ‘outside’ looking in on the behavior of self-identified “Christian” nations in the 20th century would have seen them destroying each other and their imperial structures in two global wars, after having run riot around the globe gobbling up the lands and wealth of ‘lesser peoples’ (including the Muslim territories) through most of the 19th century. Those on the “inside” in those nations might counter that the “Christian” influence” was steadily diminishing from the end of the 16th-17th century ‘wars of religion’ (as a direct result of the destructive effects of those wars, Christians slaughtering each other over doctrinal hair splitting transformed into ideological weapons by the rising absolutist monarchies and consuming the wealth of much of Europe), and that by the time of the 20th century world wars that influence was decidedly secondary to the influence of the “Enlightenment” and “Romantic reaction to the Enlightenment” (all more-or-less true, but requiring a particular interpretive framework to make sense of it).

Actually, the foundation of Christianity IS the Old Testament (do a close reading of the letter to the Hebrews).

I must not have made myself clear.
I am a Roman Catholic, by birth and later by choice.

I will not get into a ****** contest over sectarianism, not now not ever.

But just to clarify things further, from my perspective, in my personal universe the Old Testament only confirms the monotheistic origin of Christianity, the continued validity of the Ten Commandments, and the history of the Jewish people and the New Covenant. Nothing else.

Faith is a non-negotiable personal thing. I am neither compelled to convert others, and will not countenance proselytizing.

My 22-year Christian/Catholic education, and my later readings of Paul of Tarsus, Thomas Aquinas, CS Lewis and others were sufficient to confirm my faith. I am a bad Catholic. I believe that all can be summarized by two rules for living :

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you...
and...
Live your faith by example.

No further discussion will be considered.
Thank you for your opinion, nevertheless.
