Anger over Quran burning spreads in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan – Anger over the burning of the Muslim holy book at a Florida church fueled a second day of deadly violence half a world away in Afghanistan, where demonstrators set cars and shops ablaze Saturday in a riot that killed nine protesters, officials said.

The church's desecration of the Quran nearly two weeks ago has outraged millions of Muslims and others worldwide, fueling anti-American sentiment that is further straining ties between the Afghan government and the West.

The uproar even brought violence to the normally peaceful northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif on Friday, when a crowd of protesters — apparently infiltrated by insurgents — stormed a U.N. compound in an outpouring that left four Afghan protesters and seven foreign U.N. employees dead.

The Quran was burned March 20, but many Afghans only found out about it when Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned the desecration four days later.

If a Christian Church sees the Koran as the work of the devil, would they be justified in fighting the evil one in this way?

It's an effective way. Let those who can see, observe how easily Islamists go into violent, murderous rage at any "disrespect" shown them, and from that deduce the true nature of Islam.

Burning is too nice.

I can think of a number of uses in the animal care field.

Are their Sunni vs Shia Korans?

If so there is an easy opportunity to have them clean each other out.

We also had the Mohammed cartoon riots three years ago. There are quite a few acts of free expression in the West that will set off riots of death and destruction among Moslems.

And they do prove the pastor’s point as several have said.

It would be like have the Afgan’s burning their own Korans. So it’s really not the same.

I don't really care whether you deem one acceptable or not.

Does anybody know if I can actually purchase the TP shown below. I have a political/religious 1st Amendment comment to make and it has a turtle head.

This joke about the 12th Emmon, al-Mahdi, illustrates how self-defeating this radical movement is:

Question: Why didn’t Lassie go for help when the Emmon al-Mahdi fell into the well?

Answer: Lassie was insulted by al-Mahdi when he told him to go away, and said, “I don’t want to be rescued by a lousy, filthy, bastard dog!”

This is the way they look at the West, as some lowly dog, who wants to rescue them from their doom deep in the well of their pre-rational religion.

In Islam, there’s no separation of Church and State. It’s about power. It’s easy for the Mullah’s to fine sheep to do their dirty work. All organized religions are like that. I don’t believe you have the freedom to choose your religion over there. It’s Islam or death. Just like the Mormons, Catholic, & Protestant leaders religion is just a tool they use to get and keep power over the sheep.

My sister and I now only have Conservatives as friends, or non-political people.

The libs defriended us, lol. We kept asking for facts to back up their claims, as we did, and they got frustrated with us, called us names and defriended us!

That includes some family members!

I guess this is what becomes of an 'entitlement mentality' taken to an extreme.

The Muslims are told in the Koran that they are superior to non-believers and are commanded by Allah to spread Islam. Of course, this superiority applies only to males.

When they are opposed they resort first to bluster and then to violence.

I am afraid that we are going to have to kill tens of millions of them just to get them to be quiet for a while. They will never go away while any remain alive.

Islam is in dire need of a reformation but I don't think it is capable of one.

Well, I don’t want to waste good money buying a Koran in order to burn it.

You have a point there. I'm sure there is some muslim organization you can contact to get a free one though.

When muslims quit destroying Bibles, burning churches, imprisoning Christians, hacking off the heads of infidels, and flying planes into buildings, then I’ll experss some concern about koran burnings.

In the meantime, they can riot and kill and destroy their own people and property in their own countries for all I care.

That’ll teach us, won’t it?

Gamecock: You want to please God? Stand in front of a Mosque and preach the good news

Well spoken. No slur against Balding_eagle but it would take a lot more guts to do that rather than what Pastor Jones is doing. And there are many good Christian missionaries (Baptist, Presbyterian, Catholic, Pentecostal etc) who are doing this and deserve our support, prayers and admiration.

That being said, a Christian Church has no business burning a copy of Koran. It does nothing, zip, nada to advance the Kingdom of God.

Quite right -- our aim is to preach the good news to them. By burning the Koran Pastor Jones is closing the ears of some who may have listened. Now they will only think of the burning of the Koran rather than of the Word of God.

This is like what happened in Canara district in Karnataka in Southern India in 2007-2008. Some Christian groups published leaflets that compared Hindu gods and goddesses to demons and demonesses. Be that what it may be, this was not the way to get people to listen to the Word. One does not first slap and then say "listen to God".

Pastor Jones' burning has probably set back the quiet, undercover work of many Christian missionaries (of various Christian groups) who have been quietly bringing many to Christ. While Jones has the full right to do this, it does not advance the kingdom of God

I am having a hard time trying to figure out the rioting and the destruction of property in their home country. I do not go and set fire to my home or my neighbors business because some moron burned a Bible in Donkey Fart, Afghanistan. What is the thinking behind that.

It would be good to read Douglas Adams about the Krikets :)

But on a serious note, the reason for the destruction of property is that they do not own much of anything and their madrassas (funded by the Saudis) push it into them that dying for the Koran will send them to a better place. They have no hopes on this present earth, they have no past (despite Afghanistan having millenia of history, the Islamic hordes have removed the memories of the great Hindu, Zoroastrian, Buddhist, Jain and Greek religious temples, monuments and universities that were part of this landscape.

My wife accuses me of acting like Sheldon Cooper at times, but hey, one needs to start from the beginning to really understand why the modern world acts like it does. So, here's what I recall (will recheck the facts but am pretty sure these are accurate):

Afghanistan is part of the overall Indo-Irani cultural "continent" with a history stretching back to Aryan times when it was part of Kambojas as mentioned in the Vedas. This area was the seat of a lot of cultural exchanges and Hinduism, Zoroastrianism and Buddhism mixed here. Northern Pakistan was the site of many great Hindu universities like Taxila and Buddhist ones and monasteries too.

By the 1st century AD, Nestorian Christians (Church of the East/Assyrians/now Chaldean Catholics) had permeated here and there were many Christian converts.

This area and all of Central Asia (what is now Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, AFghanistan, Kirghizia and parts of southern Kazakhstan were Irani with Irani (Scyth/Saka/Sarmatian) tribes that later agglomerated into federations and states like Bactria and Sogdiana and were satraps in the Persian Achaemenid, Seleucian and PArthian empires

under the Greco-Bactrian and Indo-Greek and then Saka kings this place was a center of high culture.

And then Islam came..... starting from 800 AD, this was slowly destroyed.

and with the coming of Islam the Turkic tribes also infiltrated and killed millions of Iranis (Christians and Zoroastrians), making Central Asia primarily Turkic as it is today but with Irani culture

The Irani Pashtuns/Pathans and Tajiks and Iranified turks the Uzbeks were conquered by Pathan warlords to form the state of Afghanistan. This place was barbaric, nothing like it's past and was used as a frontier state between the British and Russian empires by the end of the 1800s.

Afghanistan had a chance in the early 50s when Kabul was quite a liberated place and burqas were not to be seen. The Communists took over and things were bad, but nothing compared to what it is now. And then the Taliban came -- Pathans indoctrinated in Saudi-sponsored and Saudi, Wahabbi run madrassas in Pakistan, they came with American weapons given to them by the Pakistanis and they put the final nail into the coffin of this once great state.

Now the Afghanis have nothing to live for and everything to die for -- the US invasion did improve things, but a lot more is needed. India was doing this, bringing back culture to Afghanistan, but the Pakistanis have been sponsoring war in this country (Pakistan prefers a chaotic Afghanistan as if Afghanistan is peaceful then the Pathans in Pakistan's North-West Frontier province will want to split Pakistan and join their brethern in Afghanistan and if that happens then the Baluchis will want to join THEIR brethern in the Irani province of Sistan-E-Balochi (Baluchis are Irani people too). This would leave just the Punjabis and Sindhis and Muhajirs (Moslems who came to Pakistan from central india during Partition) in Punjab and Sindh. And all three groups despise each other and fight each other.)

For these people, life is not worth living and a little "fun" like breaking bricks can make their lives "interesting".

What is needed is a heavy dose of Christianity,.
