Petraeus condemns Quran burning as protests rage on

Top U.S. officials in Afghanistan on Sunday condemned the burning of a Quran in the United States that sparked three days of protests in which more than 20 people died.

Burning the Muslim holy book "was hateful, it was intolerant and it was extremely disrespectful and again, we condemn it in the strongest manner possible," said Gen. David Petraeus, who heads the U.S.-led international forces in Afghanistan.

U.S. Ambassador Karl Eikenberry said in a statement that Americans respect the Quran "and all religious texts and deplore any action that shows disrespect to any religious faith."

"At the same time, I want to emphasize, as have many Afghan leaders, that to attack and kill innocent people in response to the deplorable act of one individual is outrageous, and an affront to human decency and dignity," Eikenbery's statement said.

Anyone who thinks the pastor caused the riots, should be banned from ever posting anything saying anything bad about Islam here on FR, or else they are a hypocrite. If we are free to criticize Islam here on FR, a PUBLIC forum, accessible to the rest of the world, then why should the pastor be any different?

The General, the Ambassador, have to say whatever they have to say to help protect their people, our brothers and sisters, there on the ground in the hellish country. Give ‘em some slack. It’s the least and probably the most, under the crazy rules of engagement that they can do.

The Muslims just love an excuse to kill Americans.

And that is all that it is ...an excuse. I have no sympathy whatsoever for people who want to live in the 7th century, and drag everybody back in time with them.

Oh, the irony! They have to say things that validate jihadi rage because of ROEs that make our troops sitting ducks. /s

I agree that what the preacher did with the book was dumbheaded. He should be personally glad he did it in the USA. However, I don’t really believe our soldiers are fighting to protect my ass. I did that in WWII and my brother who died on Okinawa told me he was doing the same. At some point we should have figured out that these people in Afganistan are the ones who don’t give a rats ass about our military. At some point we the USA should have acknowledged a failed mission and cut the losses. Do you hear anyone now talking about taking down Al Quaida. We have had our Korea, our Viet Nam, our Iraq. When do we get back to keeping our military and personnel lives for our defense instead of building other ungrateful nations with majorities which don’t mind/care about USA blood on their soil.

Agreed, why just burn books? We need to sponsor a mass koran burning in Afghanistan. Publish it in Al Jazeera a month in advance. Get some imam to issue a fatwa that all faithful Mujahideen should be there to stop it. One or two fuel-air explosives and look at all the good you can do. Just as good as a bug zapper.

From the WSJ:

"Most Afghans learned about the Quran burning in Florida only when Mr. Karzai on March 24 (4 days after!) condemned the act as "a crime against the religion and the entire Muslim nation," called on the U.S. and the U.N. to bring the perpetrators to justice and demanded "a satisfactory response to the resentment and anger of over 1.5 billion Muslims around the world."

Can you read English Gen. Petraeus, you stupid tool? It was KARZAI's fault. How unworthy is Petraeus of Gens. Pershing or MacArthur, who would shot the rioters and buried them with pig entrails. Instead he shivers like a frightened child over the Muslims savages. Pathetic.

I have thought about it alot, and my opinion hasn't changed.

The Koran-burner is a self-serving idiot and what he did was pointless.

I realize it gives folks around here a chance to pretend they're tough guys to condemn Petraeus (while sitting at home typing on a keyboard), but the General was doing his job.

Remember when the liberals called this guy “be tray us”? Maybe they were right after all, although the funny thing is, now because of this they will be supportive of him. Liberals loved McCain too when he ran against Bush but turned on him when he ran against Obama. Either you have freedom of speech in a country or you don’t, maybe we will soon find out.

That is possibly the dumbest, most thoughtless post anyone has ever written to me since I joined FR 10 years ago.

Perhaps you should ask my son what he thinks to his face, and see how much he thinks I'm 'rebuking' his sacrifice for the safety of America and his risking his life to get rid of terrorists.

No. On second thought, don't. For your sake.

He didn't earn his Bronze Star being a milquetoast sitting at a computer.

He did it to get attention. And he made it General Petraeus' business because we all know it would put our troops at greater risk.

He had the 'right' to do it and the responsibility not to.

Defeated by our own people.
