Petraeus condemns Quran burning as protests rage on

Top U.S. officials in Afghanistan on Sunday condemned the burning of a Quran in the United States that sparked three days of protests in which more than 20 people died.

Burning the Muslim holy book "was hateful, it was intolerant and it was extremely disrespectful and again, we condemn it in the strongest manner possible," said Gen. David Petraeus, who heads the U.S.-led international forces in Afghanistan.

U.S. Ambassador Karl Eikenberry said in a statement that Americans respect the Quran "and all religious texts and deplore any action that shows disrespect to any religious faith."

"At the same time, I want to emphasize, as have many Afghan leaders, that to attack and kill innocent people in response to the deplorable act of one individual is outrageous, and an affront to human decency and dignity," Eikenbery's statement said.

“I say the same about the good pastor.”

Given the experiences of the Danish and Swedish cartoonists and artists* who previously challenged Islamic orthodoxy, I´d say that the good pastor very much has skin in the game.

* I have lost track of the assassination plots and general violence against them. Highlights include having to cower in a safe room while your around-the clock security detail shoots a crazed intruder armed with an axe, people trying to torch your house, being assaulted during lectures, large international assassination plots (yes, plural) against you being foiled by security services in the last minute, etc.

Some reading on the perils of challenging Islam while living in the West:

Thanks...

My protection of the troops are first & foremost.

Not what actions I would like to express to show my contempt. The preacher in Florida I think an opportunist and disgusts me.

Note, how Obama use to opt out of wearing the American flag pin, now on camera he has one displayed on his lapel?

Guess I also must stop watching FOXNews for a while. Beck had higher ratings then the other pundits on other networks can pull in, but perhaps Beck finding religion doesn't mix when news is the focus. I wondered how long he would stay after his factoring his religious values to the program. I listen, but do not watch because of time factors—but was surprised at the announcement. Guess I watch even less now—the networks are giddy this morning.

Sorry on the change of subject.

“Petraeus is doing his job in condemning this man’s utter and reckless stupidity. “

Petraeus does not have a job condemning Americans legal freedoms and actions.
He has the job of protecting American rights worldwide, and protecting and DEFENDING the Constitution. I’m pretty sure he held up his hand and swore to something along those lines. If he wants to get into lecturing or changing Americans behavior, he should lecture at Berkley.
You may want to become a dhimmi and kowtow to blackmail, becoming a good, subservient slave, but don’t try to speak for free Americans.

“But the way a trainer masters a brute beast is not by taunting it. It’s by using his proper advantages.”

And the way to deal with savage undeterable murderers is destroy there messages of hate before it spreads, and kill every one of them that gets violent in reaction, not kiss their book and ass in the same bow.

“So you are okay with the Muslims killing our troops, just because of this idiot small church pastor?”
...”just because of this idiot small church pastor?”

“...”just because”...

Find me the muslims killing , as you so pithyly put it, “...”just because...” of this free American living a free life.
Find me the peace and tranquility towards America from these muslim savages, respecting our freedom and other religions, and democracy in general.
Find me how this freedom-loving American patriot cause hundreds of years of barbaric savagery from the most evil cult the world has ever known by burning a koran in 2011.
Now find yourself a copy of the Constitution, and what the military exists for, and what oath officers swear to uphold, regarding “protecting and defending” said Constitution.
It doesn’t say “uphold it when it is safe to do so”!
You either stand for the Constitution, or use your troops to enforce its dictates, or take off the uniform and lecture at Colombia University.

You didn't author the post I was replying to? Then why is your name on it?

Pardon my confusion, but I guess I accept your apology. Does that mean you weren't actually accusing me of being anti-American and pro-Islamofascist in your post to me? Or what?

Someone posted the article I was posting about as a reply to my post. It caused me some confusion as to who was replying to me, or to that post. I originally, (hang on, it gets more confusing), thought you had posted to my article, (which it now seems you did), but then it looked like you posted to...well, I could go on about how much I screwed up, but if you were posting to my response, I retract my mistaken retraction.
I stand by whatever you think I said, if indeed I answered your post on my post.
There, doesn’t that make it all much clearer?

All I need to have clarified is if you truly believe that thinking Petraeus was doing his duty protecting his troops is anti-American and pro-Islamo-fascist.

As you can see by my tagline, I have my own flesh and blood 'in the game' as it were, and libelous attacks on my patriotism don't sit well with me.

Were you confused, or did you mean your ad hominem attack?

After you answer that, I'll let you go and you can do some newbie research into how to post on FR. There is help available for those who are hopelessly lost.

I stand by the fact that the general, for who I previously had great respect, is in no position to lecture Americans to ignore the Constitution.
If you think that threats of violence from someone override the Constitution, skin in the game or not, you should rethink your position. You are not the only one with relatives in the military. I just hope they respect the document they are fighting to protect more than you.
I guess your happy now that an American citizen has lost his right to peaceably assemble and free speech in Michigan, because the savages might riot.
Here is where we disagree...he should be allowed to obey the law and protest, like they could protest at a church if they were actually part of America, and took our rights seriously. They, on the other hand, have a right to counter protest, which I will protect any way I can.
They do not have the right to threaten violence, or react violently, and if they do, kill them as quickly as possible, until all that are left are those that understand that others have freedoms, also.
I don’t know what side you put yourself on, but if you or anyone else are for silencing the constitution, I believe that says it all.
How far gone are you...do you think I deserve to be violently quieted, or threatened with beheading if I don’t agree with you? Where do you draw the islamo-fascist line for yourself?

You guess very wrong. Perhaps you shouldn't jump to ridiculous conclusions based on partial data.

Glad to see you defend the Constitution, though, since you just joined FR a short while ago. You'll learn a lot here, if you care about facts.

Now let's just take one of your errors. Petraeus did not lecture Americans to ignore the Constitution.

He told this Jones nutcase that he shouldn't burn a Koran. This Jones nutcase shouldn't have burned a Koran.

What is one's right, in not necessarily the moral thing to do. I have many rights that I don't exercise because of higher moral standards.

Asking nutcase Jones to do the right thing and help protect our troops is not telling ANYONE to 'ignore the Constitution.'

Words mean things, newbie. Learn to use them accurately.

OH........and this question is so bizarre that it does nothing more than make me laugh. The only one threatening and making up garbage about people who disagree with him is YOU.

Words mean things, newbie. So I recommend you stop swimming in the deep end with your dopey ad hominems insuring that no one on this board will ever take you seriously.

btw, I won't forget your name now. 'realetybytes' - daffy newbie who throws around the most incendiary insults and reveals his own lack of rational thought (causing serious doubt that he is not a DU troll).

See you around..........or not.

The good general is missing an opportunity - he should have killing the rioters with as quickly and efficiently as possible. He’d eliminate a lot trouble makers and clean up the Ashcanistan gene pool a bit...

Just trying to get a baseline, it’s hard to keep up when you change the rules as you see fit. That’s why they wrote the rules down, so they would know what freedoms we held dear, and wanted them to protect, in our name.
I’m glad you agree he had the right to burn that koran. We all know that was just that days reason for the cultists to attack Americans.
Petraus made a political statement. In it, he derided the document he has sworn to defend.
Instead of saying that Americans of all stripes learn to live peacefully amongst flag-burners, KKK lovers, Christian bashers and numerous other amazingly insulting things we all most certainly do not agree with. That with the freedom of America, you do not have to conform to others religious views. The government has no say in religious matters, except to ensure, through men like himself, that no one infringes on their right to avail themselves of that freedom.
In that way, everyone is able to practice their beliefs in peace and safety.
Instead of taking the opportunity to point out all that freedom means, and what America truly stands for, the general chose to talk down to a sovereign citizen pointing out the freedoms in America as opposed to the shackles of a violent, bully cult.
If it comes to standing with someone who wants to exercise his right to speak, no matter how ugly that speech, or someone that wants the right, under any circumstance, to decide to kill me if I happen to say or do anything they don’t like, well, I don’t have a problem making that decision.
Col. West protected his men. General Petraeus’s words did his men no favor.
Osama Bin Laden referred to us as a paper tiger as we bend to their complaints. I wonder why they think that...?

Now why didn't you do that in the first place? That is....state your views without the brainless, baseless, nasty personal attacks that made you look like a flaming idiot?

You see, as adult conservatives, we have the right to disagree on details while agreeing on the fundamentals, but your need to lash out in such a bizarre fashion destroyed your credibility.

I'm glad to see that you were eventually able to state your opinion without the 'you like beheading' nonsense. Perhaps on another thread at another time you can start sanely, and we can talk.

Have a good day. Live honorably. Speak the truth. Respect the Constitution.

btw, in no way did Petraeus "deride the Constitution"....by direct statement, nor by inference.

You probably should think that through a little more carefully before using such inflammatory rhetoric.
