If you can’t afford to be in Congress - don’t. Besides, I think they still get paid.

Members of Congress receive an annual salary of $174,000
No mention of the free healthcare or the 1000s of other perks they get.

In the last Republican-caused shutdown, Fed workers who were furloughed got their pay retroactively once the Republican-caused shutdown was over. So it’s like paid vacation.
I don’t know if that applies to a TEA Party caused shutdown, though!

Dont tell me our esteemed political leaders are living paycheck to paycheck like most of us?
She must be doing something wrong or not on the right committee.

If the troops have to forego paychecks and stay on the job then so should Congress.

AFAIK she's married. Doesn't her hubby bring in any income?
I would think that being a congress critter's spouse is a gateway to a high paying job in DC, like Linda Daschle.

I don’t think she is as poor as she claims but, this can be a real problem to many in congress. The wealthy congressmen don’t need a paycheck to get by and can use it as leverage against those who don’t. Vote my way to get your paycheck. If you believe people like Joe the plumber should be able to run for congress you must also understand that losing money or even delayed payment can cause hardships. Some suffer in less dramatic and public ways than others. I think we need to build a dormitory that can be used my elected officials while in Washington. That way the don’t need to maintain a residence in their elected district and in Washington.

Then she certainly ought to know what the average American has to put up due to high taxes because of the Democrats’ excessive spending, social programs, earmarks, etc.
