Americans nationwide are evenly divided over the issue of same sex marriage. But Republicans in Mississippi are divided over a wholly different wedlock issue: interracial marriage.
In a PPP poll [pdf] released Thursday, a 46% plurality of registered Republican voters said they thought interracial marriage was not just wrong, but that it should be illegal. 40% said interracial marriage should be legal.
Gov. Haley Barbour, with a home state advantage in Mississippi, also topped PPP's survey of the GOP primary field at 37%, followed by Mike Huckabee at 19%, and Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich at 10%.

PPP released
another poll [pdf] a month ago with the loaded claim that Americans supported
Charlie Sheen for president over Sarah Palin, so take with a mega-grain of salt.

So, what do non-Republican Mississippians think? Odd poll to run. Unless you were trying to influence public opinion and smear Republicans.

Oh bullshit... we do not give a damn about who other people choose to love... but what we do REFUSE to do any longer, is to pay for the children that others wish to have and cannot support. That is the issue that matters and that issue transcends race.

Two things ~ (1) Yes, they are beginning to "ligthen up" in Mississippi ~ (that's a pun). (2) Way back when I was in the Infantry I served with guys from down there and they ALL got tans. I don't tan. All Mississippi guys got an advantage in the Souf'.
Not that tanning easily proves anything, but it does!

Absolutely. Humans should not be allowed to marry sheep, or lobsters, or chickens. That is what 'inter-racial' marriage means, because we are all one race, the HUMAN race.
The absurd thing is, the way things are going, I'll probably be called out-dated and intolerant for even taking this position in a few years...

it may be mixing up the gene pool, but it doesn't mix the racial pool - poles, scots and irish are part of the white racial pool last time I checked.
I think what the article was talking about was racial mixing as in white and black, not ethnic mixing with in one race.

This isn’t all that useful a statistic unless there are other states to compare it to, and some background information included as to in which states it’s most recently become legal. Breaking it down by race, and also comparing it to gradations of attitude might help too.
There was recently an interracial couple in Florida, if memory serves, where the woman was African-American, as were the two assailants looking to kill the man. They made it clear they attacked him because of that. I don’t know if those two would have been surveyed as thinking it should be against the law, but what they did was as bad as anything ever done in the South (or anywhere else), and I’d wager was far worse than anything in the heart of those Republican Mississippians who thought the old ways had some merit when looking at the results of all the new ways of doing and thinking about things.
Someone else also pointed out that taking a look at attitudes of Democrats in Mississippi on this should have been done too.
