Congress Strikes a Budget Deal, Averts Shutdown
Fox News ^ | Apr 9, 2011

DEVELOPING: Congressional leaders, with barely an hour to go before a federal government, announced late Friday night they had reached a deal to fund the government through the end of the fiscal year.

House Speaker John Boehner, speaking briefly to reporters after talks had concluded, said the plan was to pass one last short-term spending resolution Friday night to buy lawmakers the time needed to prepare and pass the final budget bill.

“Thanks for keeping count.”
Uh... I know there was at least one 10 billion cut.

I’m not sure this agreement doesn’t somehow include those cuts or that all the cuts are ‘real’. Have to see the bill to know. These are politicians speaking after all.

It's like Winston Churchill said: "We will wave at them on the beaches, we will hold cocktail parties on the landing grounds, we shall compliment the Majority Leader in the fields and in the streets, but when they get to the hills, by God we'll stand up and fight." We're big enough to multi-task, sir. My heartfelt wish was that we would have done so.

You said this all with great eloquence! LOL! I do empathize, but I still hold firm in my conviction that there are battles to pick.

For example, let us stay with the Churchill analogy: When the English were cornered in Dunkirk, with the channel between their armies and their home, should they have stood firm there? Was that the proper hill to die on? Or, perhaps, was it wisest to let a little battle go, so that World War II could be won?

but strategy IS important, and picking battles DOES win wars, and The Perfect should NEVER be the enemy of Progress.

Your spin on this has been overwhelming. Do you really believe that losing every battle is the way to position yourself for winning the war? Nonsense. Since the November elections the Republicans have given in time after time after time. The Dems are laughing their asses off at them. What incentive will they have for even considering Ryan's budget? They'll just keep telling the Republicans to stick it, like they did tonight.

With no leadership, the Republicans are floundering. The elections have brought no change just politics as usual. Bush/Rove "strategery" was just a cover for accepting liberal policies. The type of strategy you mention is no different.

I’m inclined to say

“Bingo”

And made more or less the same point in another thread.

Reid has agreed to have votes on both Planned Parenthood and Obamacare repeal.

Keep the eyes on the prize and that is the 2012 budget. The GOP didn’t get “everything” in this round but they got a hell of a lot. The BIG battle is upcoming. This was a skirmish and we are framing the debate. Obamarx and the Dims are talking about how much spending to cut. We are winning.

“...how does this deal amount to anything other than reducing our future indebtedness by amount one month’s worth?”

It doesn’t, except in the same way making a single extra $1 principal payment on your $300k mortgage does.

The real battle is the 2012 budget.

I hope we hear a lot more out of Paul Ryan in the next six months. I recall when Kasich was Budget Chair in 1995, and he was the Voice of the Budget. He managed to get a balanced budget out of the 'rats back then, so it is not impossible.

Kasich was a bulldog who came across as nonpartisan (NOT BI-partisan). I think Ryan can do the same thing. Perhaps he'll take a lesson from Kasich back in the day.

Keep the faith!

We need to make sure the number of current bad news stories on Planned Parenthood are circulated on the Internet:

Here is a Washington Times article (based on GAO report) that there is a Freerepublic thread about:

Planned Parenthood’s millions still missing

Exposing the Planned Parenthood business model

This is written by a former Planned Parenthood director (Abby Johnson). She states that 98% of funding to Planned Parenthood goes to a slush fund for abortions.

The final one exposing that Planned Parenthood does not do Mammograms. Might be on Freerepublic, but from a different source (LifeSiteNews, originally posted on The Hill)

This is a story first ran on The Hill and then on LifeSiteNews.com It includes a link to a YouTube Video...

Mammograms? What mammograms? New video exposes Planned Parenthood false claim

Finally, there is the story of Planned Parenthood kidnapping a 14 year old girl. There are possible criminal charges outstanding on this story. An investigation is under way. Planned Parenthood claimed the girl was emancipated because she was pregnant.

This is a Freerepublic thread (pointing to original LifeSiteNews.com story):

No, the Wal-Mart of abortuaries was not defunded. That will come up for a second vote. Now all we’ll need is the lovely Murkowski, the Maine Sisters and Scottie the Hottie to help us get it through the Senate.

Like money in the bank.

“The ground to stand on is the debt ceiling, the republicans can just refuse to bring it up, then the democrats will need to start making the deals. A win, win, if they know how to work it. Don’t raise the debt ceiling and you get automatic cuts.”

You are totally right. Too bad I just heard Mitchie the Kid McConnell saying that the Dems will have to agree to mega cuts in order for the GOP to raise the debt ceiling so it looks like they already plan to cave in. Prepare for disappointment.

Late Friday night deals have a smell to them every time.

I’m not going to go insane with anger towards Republicans, but we must elect more conservative members in 2012 than many who are there now.

The borrowing and spending continues.

Either Big Media holds sway over this country or it doesn't.

Either the people of this country want to save their country or they don't.

Either the people of this country want to really cut the budget or they don't.

Why should we wait until 2012 to find out what the people of this country want? If they don't want to do it now, why would they want to do it in 2012?

Why not just hold out for big cuts...now?

Anybody?

Laz, I admire your spirit. Let me say that first off. And I do agree that the 2012 battle is one that can and must be won.

However, I look at my kids and I say to myself, “have I advocated for everything I can that will ease the crushing debt burden my generation is placing on them, and on my grandkids?” I have to conclude, very reluctantly, that the Republican Party didn’t do all it could do. Yeah, I’d have shut down the government over this. I could advocate for no less and still be able to look my kids in the eye.

Don’t forget: IIRC, about 40,000 British soldiers were taken prisoner at Dunkirk. They went into captivity — fighting the hopeless fight — so the greater war could be won.

Your spin on this has been overwhelming.

It's how I feel. I am not comfortable putting everything we have into a small cut. I do feel comfortable, however, putting everything we have into MEANINGFUL cuts.

Do you really believe that losing every battle is the way to position yourself for winning the war? Nonsense.

Have we, indeed, lost every battle? Or is that a perception problem? I offer the following wins and decent showings as a counter to that perception:
