DEVELOPING: Congressional leaders, with barely an hour to go before a federal government, announced late Friday night they had reached a deal to fund the government through the end of the fiscal year.

House Speaker John Boehner, speaking briefly to reporters after talks had concluded, said the plan was to pass one last short-term spending resolution Friday night to buy lawmakers the time needed to prepare and pass the final budget bill.

The House repubs can kill this thing next week...or tonight. Boehner should never have goen for "the best deal he could get." He should have shut the thing down.

If they were willing to "give" here over an extra 20 billion, then they will never have the grit it takes to force the 6.8 trillion.

If the House repubs do not go for the deal, then the shutdown will occurr and Boener's days as speaker will be over. They will try and talk them into going along, but the Freshmen/Tea party repubs need to vote a definitive, "No", IMHO.

"And I think we’re positioned pretty well for the debt limit battle and the 2012 budget battle too. As you said strategery is important."

What ever gets you through the night. I have no reason to buy it, but then I haven't slept well since the 80's.

“We have agreed to an historic amount of cuts for the remainder of this fiscal year, as well as a short-term bridge that will give us time to avoid a shutdown while we get that agreement through both houses and to the President. We will cut $78.5 billion below the President’s 2011 budget proposal, and we have reached an agreement on the policy riders.

The Republicans went in asking for $61 billion. They got $78.5 billion.

They gained an agreement on "policy riders" which sought to eliminate funding for abortion in DC and for the EPA.

Honestly, how is that a defeat?

So what did we get? $39 to $40 billion dollars in cuts, and we told the Democrats all they have to do to get us to cave. The Republicans can fight their own battles. I’m not going to back them up to have them fold.

Your logic and reason have no place here... It’s fire and brimstone or nothing.

Well, maybe I have been played. I don't know for sure. Bottom line is, there really isn't a lot of room for them TO play... America won't be able to endure much more spending and borrowing.

Therefore, are they going to be parasites who feed on a dying body, OR, are they going to be symbiotic organisms who help the body get healthy?

God have mercy on the Republic that once was. It is not but a tyrannical democracy

There, you have a point: The real danger, second only to the spending and borrowing concerns, is the way we have become a smily-faced fascist police state.

I agree with you, but Boehner has no gonads. We need someone who will take Ryan’s budget and make it happen. Boner is a spineless, gutless eunuch. I called his office a week or so ago and got one of his young, arrogant snots who made it clear that he didn’t care to hear comments.

So much for being Speaker. Try calling his office next week and leave your thoughts on the spineless one.

I wondered about the total cuts for 2011. Thanks for keeping count. Given the slovenly filthy mess the pelosi 'rats left the country to sort out, I guess that is a decent result for the last half year.

National Debt increase is the next leverage point, then the Big Game, Budget for 2012.

Lord have mercy on us.

Strategically?! You say that with every loss. Ryan’s bill does not cut a single useless department and he has already said it is a STARTING place for compromise with the marxists! Is that the strategy you mean? Meanwhile none of the K Street Republicans are willing to even talk about Rand Paul’s budget cuts which gives us smaller budget. Ryan’s is smoke and mirrors designed to protect the ruling class and keep their game going. And it is apparently working!

So what did we get? $39 to $40 billion dollars in cuts,

I believe, in total, about 88 bil. Not bad, considering the promise was for 100 bil.

Laz, Ryan’s bill doesn’t have a chance since Boner caved.

The target was $61 billion. The result was $78.5 billion.

The Dems were promoting $33 billion.

How, exactly, was that a "cave"?

This is not the hill to pick to battle over. It's too small an amount; too little a deficit impact; too late in the game.

It's like Winston Churchill said: "We will wave at them on the beaches, we will hold cocktail parties on the landing grounds, we shall compliment the Majority Leader in the fields and in the streets, but when they get to the hills, by God we'll stand up and fight."

We're big enough to multi-task, sir. My heartfelt wish was that we would have done so.

I’m presuming that the moment Reid backs out of this deal, which I suspect he will, the Planned Parenthood cut goes back on the table. If we don’t get it this year (granted, I would love it if it did get through), we get it next year. The Dems will be much more unlikely to shut down the government, particularly those in vulnerable seats.

Dem senators in vulnerable states will be much less likely to vote the way they want to in regards to Planned Parenthood or a more thorough cut in the bill. 2012 being an election year has some advantages for us. Particularly as Dems are currently poised to lose the Senate. Furthermore, weak Republicans like Collins and Snowe may be forced to vote along party lines to appear to be R.

The real battle is the 2012 budget.

Many Freepers won't be happy, absolutely, but strategy IS important, and picking battles DOES win wars, and The Perfect should NEVER be the enemy of Progress.

Correct. It amazes me how many Freepers believe we could get everything we want".

They don't get that we hold only the House, not the Senate, or Oval office. They gripe, but never come up with a coherent plan about how to get what they want through the Senate.
