DEVELOPING: Congressional leaders, with barely an hour to go before a federal government, announced late Friday night they had reached a deal to fund the government through the end of the fiscal year.

House Speaker John Boehner, speaking briefly to reporters after talks had concluded, said the plan was to pass one last short-term spending resolution Friday night to buy lawmakers the time needed to prepare and pass the final budget bill.

They gained an agreement on "policy riders" which sought to eliminate funding for abortion in DC and for the EPA.

"Policy riders"? Is that newsspeak for "taking credit for eliminating Planned Parenthood funding while at the same time continuing to fund Planned Parenthood"?

overspend by $3B per day, and they agree to cut $38B, how does this deal amount to anything other than reducing our future indebtedness

sounds like youre more informed than most of the population...

on the bright side, we cant be broke since we still have checks, and we own the printing presses...

What’s logical about being continually beat up by the Democrats? We didn’t cause this mess, they did. They depend on federal spending to get re-elected. They’re dishonest and corrupt. The House already passed a budget resolution. The Democrats wouldn’t consider it. What are we supposed to do, bend over and grab our ankles?

The Republicans went in asking for $61 billion. They got $78.5 billion

As I understand it, this is not correct. The repubs went into this "round" asking for 61 billion+ because they already haad 38.5 billion and the 61 would have gotten them to 100, which is what they promised.

But Boener folded for 40 billion this round which is going to leave them at a total of 78.5 billion, short of the 100 billion promised.

The House freshmen repubs, IMHO, need to vote a definitive NO to this and show they are not willing to cave. If enough do, then the deal will fold...and, Boener's days as the speaker may be over, giving place for someone who will stand firm..which is, what I believe the American people want and voted for in 2010.

Sometimes we tend to forget the reality of politics.

Still would’ve preferred Planned Parenthood to be defunded though.

So did they defund Obamacare or not? I have heard two stories on that.

If you feel that strongly about it, I will have to look closer at Ryan's bill. It make be what you say, smoke and mirrors. If it is not, I will back it; if it is, I will join you in a fight.

For now, though, I do stand by my premise, and join Michelle Bachmann in saying this was the wrong hill to die on -- and, it turns out, we may have gained more ground then we thought. (88 billion total cuts, against a backdrop promise of 100 billion)

Getting real about this, the reason the politicians don’t want a “government shutdown” is because normal, working, traditional American families wouldn’t notice it. This is the biggest fear of the politicians, especially, you would think, the Democrats. Yet once again the Republicans have caved, just like the Gingrich Republicans caved in ‘94.

Meet the new scumbags, same as the old scumbags.

Obama’s approval rating just went up ten points. And he didn’t even have to give a speech to weeping community college girls in his downtown preacher voice with a Will.I.Am soundtrack playing behind him.

Take a bow, Boner. Way to make the man not have to break a sweat.

IMHO, Boehner performed well.

People need to start thinking out of the box to outfox those controlling the big budget calamity.

The present system isn’t working, but the more these approaches are used, the easier it is for enemies of the Constitution to succeed.

I can’t honestly call this bending over or caving. No we didn’t get EVERYTHING we wanted but we got cuts and the deal was a heck of a lot closer to what we wanted than to what they wanted. Remember, during the Clinton shutdown the Rats basically told Newt to sit and spin. This time Boehner kept them coming back to the table because they weren’t so sure they would come out ahead this time. We’ve made progress even if it’s not everything.

Speaker Boehner and the Republicans have done an excellent job.

Of course, bigger cuts would be better; and of course, defunding Planned Parenthood would be wonderful. But the Democrats hold the presidency and the Senate. The presidency is the most significant of all because of the President’s arsenal includes the veto power and the “bully pulpit.”

Our primary goal should be to regain the presidency and the Senate. It is very reasonable for Speaker Boehner and the other congressional Republicans to conclude that this compromise is necessary to make certain that Obama cannot use his bully pulpit to improve his standing among independent voters. He is destroying himself. We do not need to come to his aid by giving him issues that will help him. This is a long fight. Patience and thoughtful actions (and inactions) will be rewarded.

Obama says it’s an historic night. Lord, what’s historic about passing a budget? It’s been done every year.

Also, from what I’m reading, this deal is a week extension so they can vote on the real thing next week. Also something that Obama said he wouldn’t do.
