Teenage Wasteland: Jobless Rate For Young Is 25%—and Rising
CNBC ^ | 4/14/11 | John Melloy

Posted on 04/14/2011 8:53:19 PM PDT by Nachum

A quarter of teenagers were jobless in March, representing a surprising increase from February, even as the unemployment rate for the rest of the population decreased.

AP

This figure may only get worse if budget-strapped states raise the minimum wage, and it could also be a sign of greater structural damage underlying our economy, analysts said.

The unemployment rate for 16- to 19-year olds jumped back up to 24.5 percent in March, up from 23.9 percent the prior month, according to the latest jobs data from the Labor Department.

The total unemployment rate fell to 8.8 percent from 8.9 percent.

“Even when comprehending that teen employment is volatile in nature, the data that exists serves up some shock and awe,” said Brian Sozzi, a retail research analyst with Wall Street Strategies, in a note Wednesday. “If these (wage) increases do go through, the prospect for teen employment will remain grim as employers search for workers with advanced skills to fill positions.”

>In Southern California there is zero market for teenagers...all the jobs are taken by ‘recent immigrants’.<

I just learned from an acquaintance of mine a week ago that Universal Studios which is 10 minutes away from me already made their summer staff hires. White kids get the speaking tour gigs while the mexican kids get the “in the back” jobs. They got more than 10,000 applications for 700 jobs as what I’ve been told. The ones from the previous summer get seniority as usual.

Today’s 16 to 19 years olds couldn’t have voted for Obama. Your resentment is misplaced.

If you want to be happy that a group of young people are getting their dreams smashed, gloat over the college grads collecting their sheepskins next month. There’s no work out there for them, and what there is doesn’t pay enough to cover their student loans. Rub your hands over *their* misfortune.

Err, the “that” that I could earn in a summertime during the 70s was *tuition*, not 15K. Tuition was only 500 or 600 a year back them. $760 a year when I left.

Well they need jobs to get jobs.

It’s not our fault.

Now they can pay their taxes. My retirement is underfunded. :)

I remember that well. I’d go down to the unemployment office, pick a job from the listings and I’d go check it out and if I wanted it, I’d take it.

You are absolutely correct Wiggins. My youngest has been in this situation for the past several months - apply, apply, apply - take assessment after assessment - had 4 interviews total out of hundreds of applications. Thankfully I can report though, he finally landed a full time job - minimum wage, entry level at Jiffy Lube (vacuuming cars and putting stickers on windshields) and starts Monday!

“You must take a test that they never tell you if you passed or not and no one ever calls you back. Yet when you go to the store or company you see people who can hardly speak English working there.”

That is so true, and it is getting worse. This is not just happening with landscapers & janitors anymore; I see it more & more with banks, supermarket cashiers, and even telemarketers (where years ago your initial call for the job was a type of interview - your phone manner and pronunciation were critical - and now you get calls from “Americans” that are barely intelligible). In my area (northern NJ) you can’t even get a job that requires interaction with people unless you speak Spanish or Portuguese (though they are expanding - I’m seeing ads requiring Hindi or Urdu as well); English speaking customers are just out of luck, having to deal with employees speaking English at a third-grade level.

That’s right; that is why the young (predominantly African) youth in France riot. There is no work, and little hope of any coming along.

“I still remember seeing photos of college kids hugging and crying that dark election night”

Those idiots probably believed Obomo Kenyatta would hate white people less if elected; that didn’t happen, and those people have all day to reflect on it - they won’t be working for a while. While they can’t profess to have lost faith in Obama, I suspect there will be few votes for him next year from this gang; they have a lot of motivation to vote for anyone else that might deliver jobs.

“Illegals fill teen jobs, from delivering papers to running a fryolator, picking vegetables, car washes, construction gopher, and so on.”

Here in NJ the “paperboy” has been replaced by a beat-up van driving slowly down your street in the dark, with the undocumented driver and another in the passenger seat tossing newspapers into people’s driveways. Also, in NW Jersey, when you take the children up to the farms to pick pumpkins & such; you’d think you were in the cartels’ prime growing area. American owners, and 100% Hispanic (undocumented, non-English speaking) workforce.

I can’t count all the jobs I did back in my teens and that was during the early 80’s when the economy sucked. Cut grass, busboy, pumping gas, picking fruit, delivering papers, packing boxes, washing cars, raking leaves, shoveling snow, dog walker. My best friend would look for old lawnmowers during junk day, fix them and sell them he made enough to buy two cars.
Our parents would not give us a thing except food and clothes.

These kids need to lose their portable communication devices and the entitlement attitude and get to work.

25% is probably a low figure and still the vast majority of young voters will still vote for the marxist poser.
Though Israel is being thrown under the bus by the marxist poser, American Jews will too vote for him.
Fags, Teachers, unionists and woman who think he has a pretty smile too will vote obammy.

I applied for a few jobs that way recently. If you take the test and complete it a pop up window opens asking if your getting certain types of government assistance. No. Your application goes to the circular file, yes, you get called in for the job. Why? The company gets a tax credit for hiring such folks.

P.S.

The kids can get through the test, but not the government assistance junk as their parents get that, not them or their parents are gainfully employed making the kids ineligible.

Although this won't solve the teen unemployment problem, it might help just a little: Pull your pants up and lace your shoes. I will never hire anyone who has such low standards for themselves that they wear their pants below their ass while falling out of their lace-less sneakers. The look is intended to emulate prison attire because one of the first things a thug must do when he checks into jail is handover his belt and shoe laces so he doesn't off himself (or use them as a weapon). Hence, the sagging pants and lace-less shoes.

And I don't care if the kids wears a $2000 Brooks Brothers suit to the office every day and sings in the church choir. If I see him on the street during non-work hours dressed like a thug, I will fire him the very next he shows up for work

Most 16-19 year olds in this area that I have hired have the work ethics of a union employee.

Some here! Problem is many of the adults are exactly the same way.

Not EVERY young person is a loser and just in case you were not aware, THERE IS A SHORTAGE OF JOBS. But who cares, because we all know that what you did in your youth trumps what is reality now. Goodness, for the benefit of this country, some FReepers need to see beyond their own perfection.
