RALEIGH, N.C. – A devastating storm that spawned tornadoes, flash floods and hail as big as softballs has claimed at least 45 lives across the U.S. while roaring through the South and gaining steam in North Carolina and Virginia.

Emergency crews searched for victims in hard-hit swaths of North Carolina, where 62 tornadoes were reported from the worst spring storm in two decades to hit the state. Eleven people were confirmed dead in Bertie County, county manager Zee Lamb said.

Another four were confirmed dead in Bladen County, bringing the state's death toll to at least 21.

Gloucester is about 50 miles from me.

I like weather, but storms like that are scary.

Were there any tornadoes closer to you than that?

From the accuweather site on why these storms happened:

We are in one of the strongest La Nina patterns in recorded history.........”The strong La Nina pattern means that tremendous contrasts in air masses, with cool and dry air to the north and warm and steamy air to the south, are occurring over the Mississippi Valley. This puts many highly populated areas in the path of dangerous severe weather,” said AccuWeather.com Expert Senior Meteorologist Henry Margusity.

“In 2004, there was a two-day tornado outbreak which produced 170 twisters..... In the 2008 Super Tuesday tornado outbreak, there was 131 reported tornadoes in one day,” added Margusity.

One relative in SC. I haven’t heard from her but likely would have if something had happened so I’m not worried about her.

Well, this one out did them numberwise.

I’m thinking that this could be one of the worst ones on record for number of tornadoes. I haven’t checked it out yet.

I’m also afraid that with that weather pattern, the Le Nina, that it’s not over yet. The peak of spring tornado season isn’t on us yet.

That was quite a day we had. Two touched down within three miles of my current location. No damage here...thank God. The same can’t be said for over south and east of Raleigh.

Here in Pa. we had strong winds today. Interesting when coming across the parking lot, which sits above the city here, small wind tunnels were buzzing across it. You could see the few leaves left from the fall flying in circular motion thru the air.

We had showery weather with strong winds and hail.

No tornadoes that I’ve heard of but the hills here tend to discourage their formation.

Thanks. I do too.

There was an icon indicating a nuclear event in one of the nuclear power plants back there. But very low risk.

I suppose those things are built to withstand a tornado. But a really big tornado or worse, a swarm?

Maybe they don’t even know.

I hope you all fared well too. It was a little disconcerting for awhile there. I was tracking two tornados via the net (never lost power) and ALL of my people were OUT. Sweetie was at the hospital (work), VERY close to a tornado. She actually called me FIRST. #1 son was at work between her and me. I called him. #2 son was down around Pittsboro, about five miles from a touchdown. Daughter was over near Hillsboro. Everybody got home O.K. and in the end all we saw here was heavy rain and moderate wind. ...no damage. The sky was very foreboding for awhile though and the air had that “feel” about it. If you’ve ever been in or around a tornado before, you know what I’m talking about. I was looking at photos and videos from over near Raleigh last night though and it’s a MESS.

Not that I'm aware of.
