STATEMENT OF GOV. BARBOUR
"I will not be a candidate for president next year. This has been a difficult, personal decision, and I am very grateful to my family for their total support of my going forward, had that been what I decided.
"Hundreds of people have encouraged me to run and offered both to give and raise money for a presidential campaign. Many volunteers have organized events in support of my pursuing the race. Some have dedicated virtually full time to setting up preliminary organizations in critical, early states and to helping plan what has been several months of intensive activity.
"I greatly appreciate each and every one of them and all their outstanding efforts. If I have disappointed any of them in this decision, I sincerely regret it.
"A candidate for president today is embracing a ten-year commitment to an all-consuming effort, to the virtual exclusion of all else. His (or her) supporters expect and deserve no less than absolute fire in the belly from their candidate. I cannot offer that with certainty, and total certainty is required.
"This decision means I will continue my job as Governor of Mississippi, my role in the Republican Governors Association and my efforts to elect a new Republican president in 2012, as the stakes for the nation require that effort to be successful."
Next!
Romney? ...Romney?
In other words, he realized he couldn’t raise enough money.
I’m ok with this. Barbour is doing good where he is and his absence from the GOP primary process will concentrate conservative votes on other candidates with better chances.
That’s fine, he’s a fine person, but he isn’t electable as president.
I always figured Haley was a chick name anyway.
Had some significant gaffs that would haunt him.
He was too accepting of ‘Climate Change’.
Good. He’s done a good job as governor, but I suspect that he has mainly been fairly conservative in that job because it’s a conservative state, and that’s what the voters want. If he ran for POTUS, he would have shifted left.
On the negative, he is a long term insider, machine politician, and he could be trusted to do what machine politicians do—whatever is expedient.
Sorry, but I think that’s the truth. But he will hopefully continue to do a lot of good where he is now.
Didn’t expect this one
Mittens brings a certain bathtub ring, patina, and odorific cachet that may be distasteful to most of us. I hate the "who's next in line" crap of the GOP.
I only see one.
Sarah Palin.
The rest are RINO’s frauds, and/or just not ready.
Trump is the joker in the deck. But he’s a great pointman taking the heat.
Exactly....Haley...Mitt...Newt...Tim....Mitch...Jeb...Lindsay...What is it with GOP first names? Gak!
It is the truth. When the rest of us were being drafted, he was deep in the political scene. Conjecture on my part, but that protected him from the unpleasantness of the time and allowed him to become a prominent, wealthy lobbyist who is still collecting money from his former company.
What’ll it be: Palin/West or West/Palin?
