Lawmakers in Missouri's state House have voted to override a gubernatorial veto of a redistricting plan approved by the legislature late last month.
The successful override vote in the House all but guarantees the new congressional map, which Missouri Democrats have slammed as unfairly partisan, will become law.
It's now up to the Missouri state Senate to hold an override vote, and Republicans have more than enough votes in that chamber to override Gov. Jay Nixon's (D) veto. The veto is likely to take place by Wednesday afternoon.
More on the vote from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:
Earlier this week, House Republican leaders said that they would seek to override the governor's veto as soon as they secured the 109 votes needed. Today, by a vote of 109-44, they finally did.
Rep. John Diehl, R-Town and Country, the House redistricting chair, called it "an historic vote," and House Speaker Steve Tilley, R-Perryville, said he was "thrilled with the result."
But getting the override to the House floor wasn't easy.
Securing 109 votes meant that all 105 House Republicans needed to be present for the vote, and that four Democrats would have to join the majority vote.
Today, perfect Republican attendance required Rep. Bill Reiboldt, R-Neosho, to take a two-hour leave from the hospital, where he was admitted last night.
"He wanted to be here," Diehl said of Reiboldt after the vote.
Missouri's Republican Party hailed the vote in the state House Wednesday.
"This bipartisan vote sends a clear message that Missouris representation in Congress should be determined by the duly-elected representatives of the people rather than unaccountable judges," Missouri GOP Chairman David Cole said in a statement. "We hope the State Senate will act quickly so Missourians will have certainty about their future representation in our nations capital.
The new map eliminates Rep. Russ Carnahan's (D) district and places the entire city of St. Louis into the district of Rep. Lacy Clay (D). Both Democrats have denounced the plan.
Good news Missouri ping.
Great news!!! Any reports as to why the 4 DINOs ( I couldn’t resist that..LOL) voted with the GOP?
Sweet.
The map still must win a two-thirds majority vote in the Senate, but that vote is widely seen as a fait accompli given the Republican super majority in the chamber and support beyond that from Kansas City Democrats.
Were happy with the result, House Speaker Steven Tilley said following the vote. We think it was a fair map, we think its representative of the state and we look forward to the Senate taking action and letting it become the law of the land.
The Senate reconvenes at 3 p.m. this afternoon, and could take a vote shortly thereafter.
The drama was most definitely in the House.
In previous votes, three Democrats had joined the Republican majority. But the two-thirds majority needed to override Nixons veto required 109 votes all 105 Republicans and four Democrats.
All 105 Republicans delivered, as did the three previous Democrats: St. Louis Reps. Jamilah Nasheed and Penny Hubbard and Kansas City Rep. Michael Brown.
That final yes vote turned out to be Rep. Jonas Hughes, the Kansas City Democrat who has had perhaps the wildest legislative session in recent memory.
He cast the deciding vote on Wednesday morning despite an intense lobbying effort on the House floor by fellow Democrats. Afterward, with tears streaming down his face and staining the shoulder of his suitcoat, he retreated to the members-only lounge behind the chamber, refusing to meet with reporters.
GAD!!!!
Good Lord, Second, can we sincerely hope so! That will leave . . .who? Robin? Who is dead in the water after having been resoundingly hammered by Blunt last year. Can we pray they did not have any children to carry on the torch!
I would hazard a guess that they would prefer to sacrifice a white rep rather than a black one.
That is awesome news. Wondering what they had to offer to get enough Dems to switch?
Elections have consequences...
Redistricting is the BIG issue being missed by the led-around-by-the-nose-Lib Haters, but the Party sure knows it is screwing them, HARD...
I think they had to circle the wagons to protect Clay and Cleaver.
Yeeehawww!!! That’s what I’m talking about.
I hope the next good news out of Missouri is that Obama’s girlfriend, Claire McCaskill, has been defeated in her reelection bid; the witch.

WOW.... That map pretty much BONES the Democrats, doesn’t it!!
They will lose one, maybe TWO seats?
Nor did Ike Skelton.

Don’t get your hopes up too high.
St. Louis, to its GREAT economic detriment is an old, entrenched Union town. The dead-assed, entitlement-minded Union Richardheads, will continue to vote Commie, even if McCaskill engaged in videotaped child torture.
KC is probably the same way.
Democrats, who hold small minorities in both chambers..
That may be the ultimate attempt at spin...
