Bin Laden raid reveals another elusive target: a stealth helicopter
Los Angeles Times ^ | May 7, 2011 | By W.J. Hennigan and Ralph Vartabedian

When a U.S. military helicopter was destroyed in the backyard of Osama bin Laden's compound, it left not only a pile of smoldering wreckage but tantalizing evidence of a secret stealth chopper.

The quest for a helicopter that can slip behind enemy lines without being heard or detected by radar has been the Holy Grail of military aviation for decades and until this week nobody had thought such a craft existed.

But aviation experts are now convinced that the Pentagon may have developed such an aircraft. They say the U.S. military went to extraordinary lengths to protect its new technology by destroying a helicopter that had been damaged in the raid, either during the initial landing or in the subsequent evacuation.

A section of the craft also survived intact, and photos of it leave no doubt in analysts' minds that the U.S. had modified a MH-60 Black Hawk into some kind of super-secret stealth helicopter — the likes of which have never been seen before.

Helicopter

Part of the helicopter that had a malfunction and was destroyed during the raid in which Osama bin Laden was killed is seen near the compound. Aviation experts believe the chopper had stealth capabilities. (Reuters)

Yet another example of the alien technology acquired via the crash at Roswell... ;-)

There was a video of our “friends” in Pakistan trucking the remaining parts off. Will they sell it to China for reverse engineering? Will the nobama regime get it back? Enquiring minds want to know. The WTF foreign policy at work?

But of course, everyone can see that the helo was destroyed.

So what exactly was on fire in the video shown for a couple of days after the kill.

So much bull in so short a time. It’s got to be a record.

The first telling of the tale was that the helicopter was destroyed by the SEALs and we got to see the fire.

Now I’m wondering........what fire????

The revised stories from the ‘won’ put Baghdad Bob to shame.

Perhaps I have seen too many movies and thought that the helicopter would have been blown to smithereens at some point SO the enemy didn’t get the technology. This leaves me wondering if what I thought was truly “Hollywood” or what?

huh? The helicopter was destroyed using explosives. The explosion probably tosses this piece out of the resulting fire.

Report I read said it may have been a thermal anomaly and not mechanical failure that brought it down.

The pilot was to close to the retaining wall on landing, the tail boom struck the wall and snapped off. Everyone got out and proceeded with the mission. Unfortunately the tail boom ended up on the wrong side of the wall.

FWIW, graphics I’ve seen show the tail slamming a wall and falling on the other side. The SEALs used thermite grenades etc to destroy the fuel-laden fuselage. The dry, fuel-less and relatively intact tail rotor section on the other side of the wall survived relatively intact. Burning it would have been very hard. It would have taken time to ensure it was completely destroyed (the tail section).

We seem to have trouble with choppers in high profile special ops raids under dem presidents. First Carter in Iran and now the bamster in Pakistan. Maintenance must be a problem under marxist regimes.

From everything I’ve read, it wasn’t a mechanical that brought the helo down. The landing area was very confined so the helicopter essentially stalled out in its own ground effects because of the walls.

It’s going to take more than a few parts and some sections of metal to duplicate stealth tech. If it was that easy, China wouldn’t need to steal it. Just look at their recently revealed ‘stealth’ fighter. It has elements that looks a lot like our F22 Raptor, but it’s pretty much just looks, they dont have the thrust vectoring tech. BTW, this ‘revelation’ of a stealth helicopter is not a revelation. We’ve had a stealth attach helicopter for years called the Comanche. The only revelation is that we apparently have a ‘stealth transport’ helicopter now.

I remember when an F-117 stealth fighter broke up and crashed in a suburban neighborhood near Balto. MD during an air show. The military blocked off the neighborhood until every bit of the plane had been removed.
