U.S. Reminds Schools of Obligations to Immigrant Students
Edweek ^ | May 9, 2011 | Mark Walsh

The Obama administration is reminding school administrators nationwide of their obligation under federal law to enroll children regardless of citizenship or immigration status.

"Recently, we have become aware of student enrollment practices that may chill or discourage the participation, or lead to the exclusion, of students based on their or their parents' or guardians' actual or perceived citizenship or immigration status," says the "dear colleague" letter released on May 6.

The letter cites Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, or national origin, among other factors, by public schools. It also cites Plyler v. Doe, the 1982 decision by the U.S. Supreme Court that held a state may not deny access to a basic public education to any child, whether that child is present in the country legally or not.

Just go away, you smegma-lipped pack of pond scum.

If there is such as law, what's the process for rescinding it? I want to contact my congressman.

He wants to continue the downward trend in our schools. Few are learning anything and catering to illegals is one of the causes. (Just one - the union-controlled schools would rather indoctrinate our youth in liberalism than teach them to think.)

They don’t enforce the immigration laws, so what right have they to enforce any other laws?

Plyler v. Doe was a terrible decision.

A statute that prohibits favoring your own people over those here illegally is an example of the madness that has been in vogue in Washington for many decades. This attitude involves the slow strangulation of the very concept of the nation, the community--even the notion of a social compact.

Our "leaders," have been so afraid that some nasty mouthed person might accuse them of being "prejudiced" that they are unable to see the essential right of any people to self-preservation.

In one more attempt to wake up those who resist ordinary arguments, we have tried this more satirical one:

Freedom Of Choice?--Gulliver Discovers America

We will either wake up or perish as a people.

My wife is a first grade teacher. Spanish speaking kids slow down the learning process for all students.

This is all about how the Office of Civil Rights interprets laws. Sadly, this has been done for a long time, just more unspoken before.

I had thought that education within a state, is up to the state, not the federal government.

Then why did I have to prove my residency for my school district with my home closing papers, a copy of my child’s birth certificate, her up to date immunizations, copy of a light bill, phone bill, etc. Did I leave anything out?

It was a 1982 5-4 SCOTUS decision. Plyler v. Doe

Burger, White, Rehnquist and O'Connor dissented.

Illegal immigration has ruined our schools in CA and is bankrupting the state and local govts. The Rats still look on every new illegal or anchor baby as a annuity to get more money from the state or tax payer. An annuity which gives them more union employees, more votes and more union dues.
Something has got to give. In CA they are talking about local income taxes to support the schools..on top of federal, state, sales taxes, fees,,etc.

different sources... who decided that NO birth certificates could be required by school districts to allow a student into their classrooms? I had to present a ‘original’ copy of my children’s birth certificate just to play rec sports, year in and year out. Is there a pattern being set because of skeletons in sealed closets?

It is a plan to destroy the "privileged" status of the people who built this nation.

The Democrats,Rinos, and socialists all see the vast majority of the people as something to be manipulated and used for the betterment of those in power;and those in power don't ever intend to give it up.
