President Obama urged businesses to "step up" and hire workers, pressing banks and other corporations to do more to help an economy that he said would take "several years" to recover fully.
In a town-hall style meeting conducted by CBS News on Wednesday, Obama said the weak housing market and high gasoline prices were the biggest "headwinds" dragging on the economy.
"We've got a lot more work to do to get businesses to invest and to hire," he told the audience in remarks broadcast on Thursday.
"It's going to take us several years for us to get back where we need to be."
The strength of the U.S. economy is likely to be the main factor that determines whether Obama will succeed in holding on to the White House next year.
He said businesses and banks that reaped the rewards of extraordinary measures to pull the country out of a deep recession had a responsibility now to invest hordes of cash into U.S. jobs.
"It is time for companies to step up," Obama said.
"American taxpayers contributed to that process of stabilizing the economy. Companies havebenefited from that, and they're making a lot of money, and now's the time for them to start betting on American workers and American products."

Is he really stupid? Or does he just believe we are?
The Marxist believes in central planning, go figure. Too bad this is a market driven society that only hires when you CUT TAXES AND GET OUT OF THEIR POCKET.
He has no idea what cash flow is, or what the word "sustainable" actually means.
This idiot knows NOTHING about business and economics if he really thinks that’s how things work.
Just because you said so, eh, 0bie?
What I'd rreeaalllyyyy like to add here would get me banned for life from FR.
This is deceitful and duplicitous and twisted.
I suspect in the strongest measure that Mister Obama has never taken Econ 101.
.
In Venezuela the price of food shot up because of Chavez’s economic policies (rob from the rich — “give” to the poor) that strangled their economy (Chavez and Obama are two peas in a pod). So what did Chavez do? He personally set the prices for food. He set them so low businesses businesses would lose their shirts. Next, Chavez told the people of Venezuela that the oligarchs were illegally keeping food from the store shelves and he raided their businesses.
Venezuela is lost.
Only when you step down!
MARXISTS/COMMUNISTS/LIBERALS Need not apply.
this is a threat, not a request, from the Mini-Mussolini.
So wait....now he’s saying we are still in a deep recession? Doesn’t he watch the MSM? We are supposed to be in a recovery period now.....that kool-aid isn’t even working on him......maybe he should switch drinks....
Well idiot you and your commies in the whit house have put us where we are today..Now you are ready to take us back after you have destroyed our nation..Go to a place that burns all the time you communist, which you will..
I guess this is Obama’s notion of a command economy. He commands hiring and it shall be done, right? NOT!
I’ll let Obama in on a little secret. As long as Marxists are in charge, no one in their right mind is going to invest in the U.S. economy.
LOL.. You'd think so from the artistic photo! But this was a friendly crowd -- no tough questions posed, no making sense required.
Community Organizer Econ 101.
He can always issue an Executive Order demanding companies hire more workers and if they don’t have the FBI arrest them and the Justice Department prosecute them. /s
As others have posted this administration has done everything in its power to kill our economy, now he is demanding companies hire more workers, as if he has the authority.
When is this man going to be impeached?
exactly. He had a previous effort to get company buildings more energy efficient, and he said in a speech if they could save money on energy, they could hire more people. He is an idiot. Businesses hire people when they have more work than people. They aren’t going to hire an extra person to sit at a desk and play solitaire just because they save a few bucks on the heating bill.
Who’da thought solving the unemployment problem would be so easy?
