ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) An Alaska bear hunter who was severely mauled by a grizzly over the weekend has been flown to Seattle in critical condition, authorities said on Monday.
Nome resident Wes Perkins, 54, was listed in critical condition and in intensive care at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, a spokeswoman for the hospital said.
It was Alaska's first bear attack of 2011, officials with the state Department of Fish and Game said.
"As far as I know, this is the first significant incident of the year," said Gordy Williams, special assistant with the department.
Perkins, a former Nome fire chief, was attacked on Sunday by a large bear that he and two companions were tracking by snowmobile in a hilly area outside of Nome, the Alaska State Troopers said.
Perkins was riding in front of his companion when the bear charged him, trooper spokeswoman Megan Peters said.
The other men in the hunting party shot and killed the bear and called for help by radio, she said.

Bears simply are not prey animals.
LOL And deer are? Or duck or quail or squirrel, or any of the other dozens of other animals that we hunt? Come on.
BTW, bear can be serious predators. I saw the remains of one campsite at trout lake Montana after it was depredated by a grizzly.

Have you ever been to Alaska? There are bears everywhere, including in the cities and backyards, grizzly bears. Bears wander through the villages like they own the place, look kids over on the playgrounds at schools. Most rural schools keep a big ole rifle in office just to kill bears on playgrounds.
You jokers don't have a clue about reality. People up here shoot every bear they see as their patriotic duty. I had some Indian friends down FT Yukon kill a polar bear 2 years back that had been wandering around their village, killing dogs, looking for a kid to pull down & EAT (make sure that you understand). They went out on snowmachines looking for the bear that kept coming into the village. That's how people handle ongoing bear problems; they go out and hunt them. Man you idiots?

“Sorry, I never understood the point of hunting bears.”
Ok. Then it is your choice not to hunt them.

actually a catfish spear can sure sting ya...but only lethal to those with sensitivity
Alaska has over 50,000 grizzlies...estimated..it’s not like folks are murdering the last black rhino
I don’t bear hunt but my dogs would love it if I did..they are made for that and hogs
I will kill a coyote if he’s dumb enough to wait on me to get to my 22 mag by the back door..but they are smart..you need a wounded prey call to really coax them in
and I shot a bobcat who is now immortalized on my wall
other than that...the three Ds...deer, duck and dove

The point is the excitement. I have been on a number of bear hunts with my husband in Canada, very exciting. While you are hunting them they could be hunting you. What do you want........ to live forever sitting there at your keyboard?

Some people view man and nature as distinct entities at odds with one another. Frequently these people drive cars with "coexist" bumperstickers, and they believe that the very same utopian vision they have for competing faiths, belief systems, cultures, etc. can be similarly applied to man and nature.
More realistic people recognize that humans are part of nature whether one believes we were created or simply 'evolved' there. Like other creatures, we occupy our own unique niche in the big scheme of things and in relation to all other creatures. Given that nature abhors a vacuum, the passive act of failing to maintain and defend our niche is tantamount to the overt act of willingly surrendering it.
