After 25 years of marriage we learned last week that Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenneger are separating. Now, this week, we have heard the revelations that the former California governor fathered a child with a household employee over a decade ago.
As surprising as this news is to some, I doubt it can come as a complete shock to Ms. Shriver and I believe it need not signal the end of her marriage.
Infidelity on the part of a husband or wife is not a reason to erase one's marital vows. In fact, in the aftermath of an affair, even in the aftermath of keeping a secret about a love child for a decade, spouses can reaffirm their commitments to one another and resolve to know one another at a more intimate level than ever.
Marriage, as I have written before, is a terrifically difficult journey for the vast majority of those who commit to it. Passion wanes, often ending entirely. If couples are not linked by rare and deep connections at the level of the soul, they come to feel entirely alone. For these reasons and others I believe the structure of marriage itself must be changed.
Surely, Ms. Shriver understood that in marrying a man who needed to build up his muscles as no man before him had ever done, a man who needed to be a film star, a man who needed to marry into a famous American family and a man who still needed the affirmation of a state's voters, that she was marrying a man with deep needs for admiration and affirmation.

I agree with this doctor that most marriages can be saved; the two can live separate while their issues are worked on.
Is this satire?
Dr. Ablow (!) - you can have him.
Doesn’t make a difference. They had a well crafter pre-nup, and kept their assets separate. However, most pre-nups have a provision that if one party screws up..cheats, etc.. then the agreement is void..and since Cal is a community property state..well..Maria gets a BIG settlement, including 50% of whatever Ahnuld just sign for his new movie deal..personally, I think she knew about it for years..and kept it to herself..as an insurance policy..I think she walks away with much more
I don’t think it is any of OUR business one way or the other.
Quite a bit different than the Catholic NAB;
"But I say to you, whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) causes her to commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery."
How can she take back a man who had an affair with their housekeeper, a trusted employee of 20 years service? And then kept her working in the home *knowing* that she had borne his child? Maria probably even threw a wedding shower for the woman!
And to think that he used Maria to vouch for him in front of the entire voting population of California when all those women came out to accuse him or groping them. If it wasn’t for Maria’s defense, he would never have won.
He’s nothing but a whited sepulcher. A woman would have to have NO self-respect to take him back after all the lies he told to her.
The man made a ****ing fool out of her, period, end of story.
He deserves to die alone, shunned by his kids for what he did.
And I believe that 2 CAN actually live as cheaply as 1; if one of them is a horse and the other one is a sparrow!
She’s “Catholic,” as most of the Kennedys are, but even so, annulment would be relevant only if she wanted to remarry in the Church. Assuming she wasn’t complicit in the scam all along, maybe she’d be happy single, with her children and her other pursuits.
The Church encourages reconciliation between spouses, but the wife of a serial adulterer isn’t held accountable for not staying with him forever, especially if he dumps her.
LOL!
This is some funny, funny stuff.
This is getting out of hand. This is not our business anymore. Ilove how O’reilly and others bemoan how awful this is for the Kidd...but the longer he keeps it going the worse it is for them. We deserve no more details. Tis is a family matter.
I can’t imagine being married to a celebrity. It would be a nightmare.
Why would you want to take a liar and philanderer back. Who wants it?
This “Dr.” should mind his damn business and let the Schwarzeneggers decide.
Good list. If not complete, it's 99% of the situations that actually justify divorce. If she wants to keep the scum, that's her call, but she is fully justified in dumping him.
I agree. And as for a politician, the time commitment involved even in being a candidate is tremendous. It’s not the kind of life I’d care for, although some perfectly nice couples, like my former state rep and his wife, seem to make it work.
I prefer to be at home. With no photographers, please.
Actually, it is, along with abuse, addiction, and alcoholism.
So, what about the inverse? Is a spouse who traps the other in a celibate marriage unfaithful? No one ever discusses the other side.
