Madison, Wis. (WHBL) - Governor Scott Walker says hes convinced that the voter I-D requirement he signed into law this afternoon is constitutional. But the liberal group One Wisconsin Now has its doubts and its director, Scot Ross, says theyll keep consulting with attorneys on a possible lawsuit.
Three years ago the U-S Supreme Court upheld Indianas law that requires voters there to show photo I-Ds at the polls. But Ross said the Hoosier State makes it easier for those without I-Ds to get them. Thats because driver license offices in Indiana are located in every county, and theyre open on weekends. Wisconsin has fewer motor vehicle offices, and theyre closed on the weekends which Ross says will make it hard for people to get the I-Ds they need to vote. Also, those voting absentee in Wisconsin must send photocopies of their I-Ds when they mail their ballots to their local clerks. And critics say it might be impossible for those people to get to a copy machine.
The League of Women Voters says its considering a lawsuit against the new I-D law. But theyre still deciding whether to wait until its in effect so they can identify voters who might be disenfranchised. Republicans have tried for a decade to require photo I-Ds at the polls. The G-O-P says the reason is to fight voter fraud, but Democrats say its meant to discourage their voters from getting to the polls.
Wisconsin is the 11th state to require I-Ds when voting and the ninth to require a picture I-D. Voters will be asked to show I-Ds at this summers recall elections. And if they dont, theyll get a sheet telling them they must have an I-D to vote in 2012.
That’s the idea.
Flood the zone.
Only Democrats are against Voter ID
Republicans want voter ID so there is no fraud. Democrats do not want voter ID.
Any questions?
Walker is treating the Wisconsin libs to the death by a thousand cuts. If he needs any more X-acto blades, I’ll be happy to ship him a case.
Today Belling, the local talk host said that there are 3.4 million registered voters in WI and 4 + million holders of photo IDs. Disenfranchised my butt.

Mr. Ross, the answer is plain: the Democratic legislators can submit a bill to expand hours of operation for limited services (like voter ID) and the Democratic ward volunteers can ferry people to and from, and also pay any fee that the DMV charges for the voter ID.
As for photocopies, that's also easy: Allow instead for photo IDs to be scanned and transmitted electronically from any library; indeed, the request for absentee ballot could be done using a Web form so that the process doesn't even cost the voter a first-class stamp, or a visit to the Registrar's office. Too progressive for you? Then provide for photocopying at your cost.
Really, I remember when I was in the Boy Scouts, and we had a nonpartisan Get Out The Vote campaign. If the liberals and progressives are so paranoid about this, they can get out there and do something about it.
Here's another novel idea: provide roving DMV registration vans so that the DMV comes to the people -- again, for limited services like voter ID. This would make covering nursing homes, hospitals, homeless shelters, and senior centers easy. Also places like hiring halls. A couple of vans could cover a very wide area, and provide Saturday and Sunday access as well, on scheduled dates. Poor people can then save on bus fare.
Of course, it's easier for lazy people to complain, and do nothing about it.
Now to see if the sec of state will publish it.
Every public library has a photocopier.
I agree, pass redistricting next!
I don’t get it. I have to show my ID when I vote in Michigan. Of course this is a Republican area. I wonder if they have to show ID in Detroit?
I haveno problem with showing my ID. In fact, I enjoy it. Many of the poll workers know me but they still need to see my ID.
In Detroit they have to show their Food Stamp Card and most recent Welfare Check Stub.
>> Only Democrats are against Voter ID
That certainly does seem to be the case. This is WAY overdue.
But that’s not fair!
How will the democrats be able to round up the stragglers on the streets that have no photo ID? How will they be able to trade smokes for votes? This is racist! /s
Hey! You can’t flood the voting booths with all the illegals and other riff-raff that would be bused in by the unions and commies!
Thank you for doing the right thing.
I had the same thought.
Ping!
