End Near for Zimbabwe's Last White Farmers

Zimbabwean farmers attend a meeting of white commercial farmers in capital Harare

Zimbabwe's Supreme Court heard a case on behalf of three farmers who claimed the constitution excluded confiscation of their land because they bought their properties after the colonial era ended with independence in 1980.

The Supreme Court did not agree and quickly dismissed their application.

One of the farmers, Colin Cloete, a former president of the Commercial Farmers’ Union at the height of often violent land invasions seven years ago, was one of the applicants.

He, like many of his colleagues, has been arrested, harassed and appeared in court many times, to try to stay on his farm.

Like most surviving white farmers, the cost of going to court to try to fight his eviction has been unaffordable.

Looking back over the long and difficult years, Cloete, now 58, said his struggle to remain on his farm did not make economic sense.

“Economically we should have moved off then, at the beginning, as we would have been 10 years younger and that much more energetic,” said Cloete.

Cloete said he had begun looking looking for a house in Harare, not least so he could move his possessions to safety.

He said the land invasions launched after Mr. Mugabe lost a referendum in 2000 had hurt him and Zimbabwe’s economy, and no one had benefited from this except the elite in the ZANU-PF Party.

“We are treated like second-class citizens, we are treated like we are still just visitors to this place. My father was born in this country, before Mr. Mugabe, but I am still a visitor,” said Cloete.

I know a white immigrant to the US from South African who says he got a full-ride scholarship from Tulane for his senior year, once he got his citizenship. He also said the black clerk in the financial aid office was not amused when he showed up asking for an African-American scholarship application.

There aren’t many people who will say the truth here. When the White Farmers are gone, those who wanted them gone will starve or kill each other over who “rules” and who “works”. The same thing is going to happen here when bleeding-heart, Liberal Progressives finally get their way.

The truth is, SOMEONE has to have the business sense and the where-withal to provide jobs in order to support families and society.

When Liberal Progressives finally “give the farm” to people who won’t work and have no inclination to provide any service for their livelihood, we will go down the same path.

The American taxpayer is at the limits of the multitudes of slackers which they can or will support. That’s why traditionally American bedrock companies like Coca-Cola are making tracks to leave this country.

Newsflash to Libs: American entrapaneurs and business people will NOT bend over for you beyond a certain limit. Having the means to create jobs and tax revenue, they also have the means to go elsewhere and leave you with your numerous but totally useless base.

If they, the white farmers, came to the United States, would they be classified as African-American?

My daughter went to school with a girl who's family left South Africa and were very well off and very white. When she applied to college she suddenly was getting all these unsolicited offers for scholarships from excellent schools. The high school had her classified as "African American", and with her grades she was suddenly a hot item. So this WEALTHY kid from a priveledged family got a full ride to an Ivy League college...

Thanks for keeping this in the sidebar. I would have missed it, otherwise.

It’s an important story.

I just looked at a job posting from Citi; the top of the page shows a black man, a black woman, and an “off-white” woman, all smiling at the camera, with the words “Start a Job. Find a Career” at the bottom.

If someone wants to destroy this company’s offices I don’t think I’d have any friends or relatives among the deceased; Citi could go to war over it themselves.

She is more African than Sharpton or Jackson.

Any follow up? Did she get better grades than BH0?

Smith’s actions radicalized politics in that country and contributed to the rise of Zanu-PF.

Oversimplification.
After UDI politics did indeed become more radicalised, leading to the "bush war", actively encouraged by leftists in the west not to forget the USSR. The elections were like recent EU votes, keep voting until the "correct" result (Mugabe) then go home.
Zanu-PF was created after independence as a settlement to halt the near civil war post-1980 with Mugabe's Zanu (Shona) massacring anyone (Ndebele) supporting Nkomo's Zapu.

well, it wasn’t “overwhelming” — I was surprised but the culture across Macau-Goa-Daman-Mozambique-Portugal-Brazil is or was more or less uniformly Portuguese. So they didn’t keep “racial purity”, but culturally they won.

Well, don’t forget that Zambia and Zimbabwe were Rhodesia, namely after the opportunist Rhodes who carved out his personal empire there in the 1800s. It was time to change the name. But the collapse did not happen due to the name change but due to populist, in fact communistic policies

I hope they do well in Mozambique and Zambia — they can transform these countries. Also, these white farmers are “African” — many would never feel at home in Europe or America.

It’s guaranteed tho, every time a country reverts to it’s older name for no real reason except maybe new-age nationalism of some sort then the economy reverts to the slit trench. Just go down the list: Burma, Ceylon, Ivory Coast

That's not strictly true in all cases (and definitely not in the 3 you put together)

in the case of Burma to Myanmar, this happened in 1989, long after the military coup in 1962.

Ceylon changed to Sri Lanka at the time it became a republic (from 1955 - 60 it was a protectorate and then I think a dominion like Canada -- need to check that)

The reason for the change is the term Ceylon is derived from Sinhala -- the majority folks there. By changing to Sri Lanka, this was to be more inclusive of Tamils I'd guess. However, the Tamils were already at a disadvantage from 1956 when the Sri Lankans made only one language -- Sinhalese. Sinhalese is an Indo-european language and Tamil is a dravidian language -- the scripts are different and both are definitely anything BUT mutually intelligible. So the problem started before the name change

The Ivory Coast is and has been majority French speaking so their official name always was Côte d'Ivoire. I think they asked for the name in English to be Côte d'Ivoire not the English translation in the 80s. Their problems started over a decade later. In short -- they never had an official name change.

Africa is the only area of the world without a written language.

Not true. Northern Africa was always tied to europe and among the first written languages (Egyptian) is from there

Also, to the south of Egypt, the first Christian country, Ethiopia had a written language for centuries, Amharic written in Ge'ez dating back to the 9th century BC.

south and West of that -- yes, no written language
