To fix public schools, you have to control public schools.
And theres little control when teachers unions, with their self-serving agendas, question every cost-cutting proposal and reform on the table.
Thats why so many state governments have taken swift action to limit the power of organized labor in public schools. Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana, Idaho and Michigan were the first, and Tennessee added itself to the list on Wednesday.
Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam affixed his signature on House Bill 130 and Senate Bill 113, ending collective bargaining and giving local school boards the full authority to operate their districts in the manner they choose.
That doesnt mean the unions are shut out of the discussion. The new laws create a process called collaborative conferencing, where the school board, administrators and union officials will be forced to sit and discuss many of the normal issues, including salary, insurance, grievance procedures and working conditions.
If the two sides agree on any number of issues, they can sign binding memorandums of understanding, that will serve the same purpose as collective bargaining agreements. But any issues that are left unsettled will be the sole domain of the school board, with no appellate procedure available to the unions.
School boards will also have the option of not entering into any sort of agreement with the union. In that case they would have full authority to deal with all issues in an arbitrary manner.

Wow, that’s hugh!
Way to go Tennesee!
Interesting development.
Any union that derives its revenue through tax dollars should be outlawed.
I don’t care how unions organize in the private sector save the thuggery and lawbreaking.
That’s a big AMEN!
One up on ya.
I think that Republicans have finally wised up to the fact that the Dems have a big campaign funding advantage thanks to the public unions and are now going after them aggressively. My prediction is that the unions will wise up now and start giving to the Repubs as well.
>My prediction is that the unions will wise up now and start giving to the Repubs as well.<
No. We have to avoid that. Well, it won’t happen because being a Dummycrat is part of a union thug’s DNA and any union member would rather eat buckshot than hand over any money to GOP.
I don’t want any union to hold sway over any state GOP. It’s already full of RINO’s and that’s already a problem too many.
Only one problem. Around here (and I suspect most everywhere) the unions have stacked the school boards.
Excellent!
Bravo to Governor Haslam and the Tennessee legislative bodies. Government unions are nothing but a cash laundering entity for the ‘rats.
I will note that the SEIU was a bog donor to republican Chattanooga mayor Ron Littlefield. Which should tell you just what kind of property-annexing, tax-raising, service-cutting mayor he is.
bog = big! Hugh spelling error. :-)
Unions have screwed this country for years.....it’s payback time.
The regional governors now have direct control over their territories. Fear will keep the local systems in line.

Take the auto industry for instance. N. American producers enjoyed very high tariff walls, for decades. These protected the companies from foreign competition. The big 3 bought labour peace, by essentially caving to every union demand. They could afford to do that, because of the government imposed and enforced protectionism.
After the tariff walls came down, the Big 3 started a slow death spiral. Government bailed them out — thus offering the unions a much better deal, than they would have gotten under ordinary bankruptcy rules.
The same could be said about telecommunications unions, when the government created and enforced monopolies for the phone companies.
Every industry protected by government (and that's a long list) is able to pass on the cost of union featherbedding to the consumer.
Not all of the Tennessee Republicans worked to get this bill to the Governor’s desk. We had several Republican lawmakers, who fought this law tooth and nail for the Democrats. Representative Debra Maggart deserves a lot of recognition for standing tall and strong through the entire process.
