Jim DeMint certainly fits that category. While campaigning for the Senate in South Carolina, he called for replacing the federal income tax with a flat tax or a sales tax, proclaimed gays and unwed pregnant women unfit to teach in public schools, and has advocated for effectively overturning Roe v. Wade with a "right-to-life" amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
As a senator, DeMint opposed the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002, President George W. Bush's signature domestic policy initiative, as well as Bush's internationally acclaimed PEPFAR initiative for combating the global spread of AIDS, and the 2008 government rescue of the financial services industry.

The only other potential candidate who passes muster with Viguerie is Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota. And the only two previous nominees he mentioned approvingly in the past 60 years are Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan. Those men were allies, but the difference for Republicans between 1964 and 1980 is not trivial. Following the 1964 script in 2012 means handing Obama a second White House term -- in a landslide. The 1980 Reagan example, of course, is the Holy Grail for conservatives. But does anyone really think Jim DeMint or Michele Bachmann could be the second coming of the Gipper?
Actually, Angela Toft does. She's a California grass-roots activist whose first campaign was running "Youth for Reagan" in her home town....

"There are a number of fairly conservative candidates in the race, but Senator DeMint is the one who can bring together all conservative factions," she says. "When you mention Jim DeMint, they all come flocking. He is the only one who can unify and electrify the conservative base, and we're going to need that going up against Barack Obama."

Real Conservative Bump!
Do you have some kind of a bot that posts this to every thread mentioning a possible candidate, or do you do this full time?
Maybe you will be recorded as #13 - if the scoreboard is accurate
Please don’t bring down Demint with Bachmann.
Demint/Bolton would be a more reasonable combination.
"These candidates rush over to the right during the primaries, and then tack to the middle in the general election," complains Richard A. Viguerie, the longtime conservative direct-mail guru. "That's what ruling-class Republicans do. We're not interested in somebody who says, I'm opposed to increased taxes.' That's all rhetoric. Government has gotten too big. If you don't want to roll it back, you're part of the problem."And then you've got the current crop of Republicans in the House of Representatives who stayed conservative in the general election, won on their conservative stands, and then went on to defund... NOTHING!
is there any way to get him to do it? i can dream. brilliant record on immigration...no worries there.
I would rather keep Bolton as UN Ambassador or SoS.
Awesome. :-)
This guy gets my vote over everyone. No question.
DeMint has a solid conservative voting record in the Senate. But he’s no Ronald Reagan. And his support for Romney in 2008 raises questions of his judgment and how principled his conservatism really is.
The big question is. Can DeMint find that fire in the belly needed to keep him viable over the long stretch of a national presidential campaign? I think not.
And just to set the record straight. Back in the 1980`s people like Paul Weyrich, Howard Philips and Richard Viguerie joined Ron Paul in denouncing Reagan’s agenda and opposed many of his policies. Attacking Reagan as a sell out to the conservative cause.
I generally would prefer a governor over a legislator, but I’d make an exception for DeMint. Instead of silly possibilities like Trump or Rudy, I wish they’d do a poll with DeMint as a hypothetical candidate. I’d guess he’d be in first place by a large margin, and that might help persuade him to consider a run.
I have them saved in html format so just have to do a copy/paste.
It's easy when the same candidate has several threads in a short span of time, because then the copy part is already done, and I just do a paste. Palin is the best example, sometimes there have been a half dozen Palin threads started within ten minutes.
The ratio of those indicating they want me to continue pointing out that Barry ISN'T a Natural Born Citizen is 72:1:12.
The one in the middle is our good FRiend Lazamataz who asked to be the undecided.
Be careful where you're going with this - there's another prospective candidate who supported McCain in 2010, and the same argument you're making applies to that other prospective candidate.

AMEN, glad you posted that. Some folks need to grow up and understand that people make endorsements during their careers often based on what the alternatives are and often based on other relational things that we don’t know about. And what’s funny is, the McCain endorsement in 2010 is far worse than any endorsement in 08 and before for reasons of a changed landscape.
SoS would be a good position for Bolton.
I just can’t see a guy like Demint teaming with Bachmann.
Nope, I'm already one of the twelve.
