Iranian women’s soccer team forfeits 2012 qualifier over head scarves

The Iranian women's soccer team was in tears after being forced to forfeit a 2012 London Olympics qualifying match this past weekend because it showed up to play in hajibs. FIFA banned the Islamic head scarf in 2007, saying that it could cause choking injuries -- the same reason it gave for recently banning snoods (neck warmers). FIFA also has strict rules against any religious statements in team uniforms.

You call yourself an “Iranian-American.” You cannot be both, so which is it?

The women are being kicked back and forth. Do you have any ideas as to how to get them out of this loop?

Nobody's kicking these woman around. A sure way for these woman to be free is to renounce their religion and put away their Koran. Short of that they leave themselves wide open to be considered supporters of Islam and their desire for "Peace"....which for them is ONLY thru Islam...it's a lie they are choosing to believe.

The women of Iran are strong and resilient. they have been kicked and beaten and stoned but they always come back and fight the evil set upon them. That's why I have such hight respect and high hope for them and their ultimate triumph. They are the ones taking their oppressors kicking and screaming back to the 20th c. -- back you see, because once Iran used to live in the 20th c. The comments here are absolutely wrong and stem from such ignorance.

I believe FIFA is doing the right thing to not allow headscarves on the players, but the consequence is a defeat for the women of Iran who are fighting in each and every way for their rights and freedoms as humans and women.

They knew this could very well happen going in...it should not surprise them at all. FIFA'S decision has nothing to do with their sense of defeat....that rests entirely in their own country. When they have fought thier fight for freedom and rights in their own country... on their own soil...and win.... then it wil be a non-issue in other countries.

You don't fight for your freedom on someone elses soil....unless you are fighting to keep what is already free...and they haven't gotten there yet.

So why don't you run that 'time of freedom' by us ignorant people so we will be properly informed.... when exactly were they free of Islam?

Oh but I do know what is going on in Iran...don’t assume because we differ that I don’t. The woman can ban together exactly as they have to play sports..and demand their right to be free of the hood.

The question is important...why haven’t they ?????

If you ask such a question, it means you don't know about Iran. Ban together and demand their right to be free??? Please don't humor me.

Talk about apples and oranges...the Star of David during Nazi Germany is a whole nother thing than simply removing a scarf, friend. Not even remotely close.

Star of David is EXACTLY the right analogy to the wearing of the scarf for the majority of women in Iran. It is not a choice. it is a subjugating, enforcing, coercing LAW and demand. But in each way shape and form women of Iran are agitating and flaunting that law by pushing it inch at a time back and goading islamists' reaction.

Iran was free of islam when it was the Persian empire and Iran was free of islamists and mullahcracy and political islam and was essentially a secular country ruled under constitutional monarchy before carter came into the picture over 30 years ago which is where my family as non moslems could live side by side w/ any and all other religions in Iran and practice whatever religion each chose.

It sounds so easy.

I could easily take that as a jab....but I'll choose to say again you have limited understanding of the Islamic "religion". Freedom from bondage to dictatorships is never ever easy...it costs people their heart soul ..and yes body.. to attain it and keep it. Not to forget Our own soldiers fight every day now to keep our nation free from Islamic influences and their terrorists thugs.

The only way the Iranian woman will be free is if and when they mount up together and demand it...knowing it will mean possibly their life to do so. Unfortunately instead they support the terrorists thugs and the lot who enable them by not opposing the very ones who keep them in bondage.

Some say these statements are made out of ignorance...they are wrong to say so...the freest nations on earth are those who have fought for and won their freedom at great cost.....and they are not Islamic nations. Rather Islamic countries continue to keep their people in bondage by using the Koran exactly as did their leadership centuries ago. That has not changed at all.

I will say again..there will be no freedom, apart from occasional piece meal for political gain, for the Iranians until they put down their Koran and denounce their false religion... if they did...the heavens would open and freedom would be theirs....and yes it is as simple as that. Instead they strap innocent children, woman and men with suicide vests and instruct this from an early age.

This is NOT about islam and ideology. This is about islamofascism. About political islam

They are one in the same Parisa...the Koran is very clear about that.

Iran was free of islam when it was the Persian empire

Islam has been the official Iranian religion since the 1600's when it was conquered by Mohammed...he won and thepeople converted. Islam has remained the official national religion to this day...and has never broken the bondage of Islam from it's shoulders.

So going back to the 1600's hardly qualifies as saying it's been free anytime during the centuries since. After all several centuries since is a very wide gap.

Iran has had very brief interludes ,in various sections, where neighbors could live peacefully side by side, you are the exception to the rule if you had that Persia. But overall they were under Islamic domain nonetheless.

The nature of islam is to fight...the Koran teaches this...but there are times allowed, when in a weakened state, where there isn't warring. Though generally even then there are outbreaks between themselves...Shia and Sunni come to mind.

But no...Iran has not been free nor known freedom since Islam conquered them in the 1600's. There is a differnce between freedom and times of peace.

When muzleems change their behavior, I’ll change my attitude.

Until then, there is nothing to forgive.

Star of David is EXACTLY the right analogy to the wearing of the scarf for the majority of women in Iran.

I suppose all woman are shot if they remove it then? No it is not at all a good analogy.

Besides it really isn't about wearing the hood in your country. It is about if or not the people will continue to live under Islamic Law rather than the freedom from it. As long as Islamic Law rules the people there will never be freedom. There may be times of peace among you, as history has shown, but freedom will not come until they do mount up an army that can fight for that. Other nations have done so to gain theirs...so to must Iran.

Problem is your country is a hairs breath from nuclear...nobody will assist you when that becomes a deterrence. Until then there is precious time left to mount up again...but I don't see the will or desire for the nation on a whole doing so again.

Meanwhile the people escape to other lands for the freedom they desire...the really sad part to that is they bring their false religion with them and for that do not adapt to the cultures they are in. Europe is a good example. Rather they choose to conquer in the courts of those lands to once again subjugate other nations to their agenda...and that is not going to change.

The Islamic march continues just as it always has...this time it will mean subjugating countries to Sharia Law...already being implimented and on the move...and certainly being screamed on the streets of our own cities.

“Have some compassion for these poor women people.”

There is a young girl (13?) on my girl’s volleyball team that wears long tights and a head covering. I’d almost say it is a modified scarf as it isn’t loose - more form fitting, perhaps for sports.

I figure the girl doesn’t have much of a choice, but it is nice to she can do sports, etc.
