Public Policy Polling: Toss-up in North Carolina
Politico ^ | June 13, 2011 | Alexander Burns

President Barack Obama is on track to make North Carolina one of the most competitive states on the 2012 map, according to a new survey from the Democratic-leaning firm Public Policy Polling reported first in Morning Score.

Obama has a narrowly positive approval rating in the state, where he’s headed for a visit today: 49 percent of voters approve of his job performance, versus 47 percent who disapprove. Independents are evenly split on the president, with 47 percent rating him positively and 46 percent giving him negative reviews.

Obama has solid leads over all the Republican candidates except Mitt Romney, whom he edges by just 1 percentage point. The president is ahead of Tim Pawlenty by 7 points, Newt Gingrich by 10 points and Herman Cain by 11 points. He performs best against Sarah Palin, leading her by a 14-point margin.

PPP flags three key points to help explain Obama's standing in the Tarheel State: his approval rating with independents, the lack of drop-off in white voter approval (37 percent of whites voted for him in 2008 and 25 percent approve of him now) and his overwhelming, 76 percent approval rating with voters under 30.

If PPP says a toss up, the GOP is a lock.

No way O wins NC in 2012.

Repubs could win by double digits.

Obama carried NC last time...don’t think it was too close, either. Are you saying it’s a surprise he’s able to carry NC, or are you saying his current poll standings and bad economy made you think he shouldn’t be able to carry it next time, and you are surprised at his poll standing there?

I live in NC and any poll watcher will tell you the amount of fraud and illegal aliens voting is huge. If we do not get fair elections Obama has a good chance in NC.

43% of the children delivered in our county are to illegal aliens.

Obama has a very large block of black voters in each Southern State who will support him no matter what.

He won by 12,000 votes, very close. A 25% black population helped, but I think he was carried by stupid suburban moderates (as opposed to me a stupid suburban conservative) who bought into the hope and change crap. I can’t see it happening again, convention or no convention in Charlotte.

it was close in 2008. It won’t be in 2012. The GOP will win NC.

Registered voters. Dem voters typically oversampled. The real news out of this survey is that even with the overweighted sampling Obama is just barely hanging on.

An aquaitance of mine told me for example, Cary, NC, is referred to as “Concentrated Area of Relocated Yankees” by the locals.

Great...

Yankees who used to retire to FL are now stopping in NC. Used to be that it was cheaper than FL. Probably not any longer because real estate in FL has gone off a cliff.

I do think it’s fishy that Obama would be in trouble in PA, yet not so much in NC. Maybe the economy in NC hasn’t been hit as hard as in other places.

the unemployement rate in NC is above 10% the current Dem Governor was under investigation. The old Dem Gov may be indicted. Remember folks, this is PPP pole.
