The anti-American mindset of Canadians is a harder puzzle to crack. We speak the same language, are mostly descended from the same culture and much more than the Mexicans, share the same values. Yet, like you, I've detected a smugness on the part of many Canadians when I travel there. Sure, we'll have regional (and national differences), but Canada ought to be thankful to have a truly good neighbor like the United States...

I suspect at least part of it is a repressed inferiority complex. It displays as an oppositional mindset.

>Did you see the cop with the Ar-15? These cops aren’t messing around with this crowd.

Unless they are putting rounds into the looters I would say all they are doing is messing around. Time to put some lead downrange.

Uh oh...If those Canucks fans get Twitter accounts, Obama and Sarkozy may give them air cover.

It’s the French influence.

Bunch of thugs - they appeared to be mostly white teenagers and 20-somethings, some wearing fan clothing and hats, although I saw a few older men in there, too. They didn’t look like anarchists to me.

I didn’t quite understand why they were busy beating and kicking the car that they had overturned; I assume it belonged to a rival. The level of brutishness was disgusting, and I hope they will be prosecuted. They certainly weren’t worried about having their photos taken, though, so they probably know they can get away with it.

Victoria Snelgrove (IIRC) died in freak accident after Sox WS win,

IIRC, Snelgrove died from a "paintball" fired by a BPD crowd control weapon (hit het in the eye, penetrated her brain) after the 04 ALCS.

How tragic is that? See your team make history with an increadible comeback then die before you can see them win their first WS in almost nine decades.

Talk about taking sports way to seriously.

I don't think it is the sports so much as taking advantage of an opportunity to loot. Any excuse to grab a five-fingered discount.

The anti-American mindset of Canadians is a harder puzzle to crack.

****

I lived in Vancouver for 20 years. The anti-American feeling is more of a reflex response to a sense of inferiority or helplessness as a country of one-tenth as many people.

They tend to hold on to the idea that their medical care is better, and their social welfare system is better, and their manners are better...

Ninety percent of Canadians live within one hundred miles of the US border. They shop and use American hospitals regularly. They winter in Arizona and Florida by the millions.

Their attitude is best ignored.

And I thought that Vancouver was a LAID BACK city!

This rioting stuff confirms what Ann Coulter wrote about in her new book.

What do you expect from a sports league that encourages the players to punch the crap out of each other like drunken hooligans while the crowd cheers wildly and the “police” stand around and watch for thirty seconds or more before breaking up the melee? The NHL is the original WWF.

I tend to agree with this sentiment. Vancouver has done this before, it’s no big surprise.

What were they thinking by putting up huge screens and letting over 200,000 people gather? Did they ever consider that the team could lose? Stupid!

Meanwhile Boston was trouble free except for a couple of minor arrests. Quite calm.

">>NBA star Steve Nash, from Vancouver and the brother-in-law of Canucks forward Manny Malhotra, sent a Twitter message imploring the fans to stop the violence. “We’re a great city and have a lot of class. Our team is great and our championship will come. Soon,” Nash wrote."

LOL!, I can see it now... A young thug getting ready to hurl a parking meter through a storefront window... "oh wait, I got a Twitter alert from Steve Nash!..."

There’s some weird competition thing going on in their mind. I sense an uneasiness to the power and influence of the United States in its short existence. They’re just really sensitive about it and reflect it with their constant jabs at the US. It’s definitely there and they aren’t as ‘nice’ as they are supposed to be. But then the anti-American sentiment has moved everywhere, Europe, you name it. They’ve all got that vibe going on and, of course, they couldn’t have been happier with the 0bama election and our own downfall. They’ve always loved their Demonrat presidents because they are all apologetic about being American. This whole world is just sick. We were the last holdout, but now 0bama has changed that. Now where’s the refuge?!
