How anything you've EVER said on the internet could be seen by employers as Feds approve firm
Daily Mail ^ | 6/26/11 | Fiona Roberts

Posted on 06/26/2011 8:55:38 AM PDT by Nachum

The Federal Trade Commission has approved a controversial firm which scours social media sites to check on job applicants. It means anything you've ever said in public on sites including Facebook, Twitter and even Craigslist could be seen by your would-be employer.[Snip]It raises the frightening prospect of any social media posting, even it's years old or was meant as a joke, being used in background checks. Applicants who use online pseudonyms aren't safe, either - the firm uses special software to link those nicknames with real, offline names known to employers.

If you use fake names on your social networking sites, how would they know it’s you?

It seems to be written to imply government involvement.

But this appears to be a private enterprise project that was not STOPPED by the FTC (which should not be regulating private enterprise anyway, IMO).

Am I correct in my second assertion?

Yes, I was technically fired for a bulletin I had posted on MySpace over my “13 points against Obama” which I wrote shortly after the 2008 Election. The problem is that I wrote it, my profile was private, and although none of my co-workers were friends of my page, that “Bulletin” somehow made it to my workplace, where I was told I was a “risk” and that even if I reenlisted, I would not be permitted to stay at my workplace and would have to PCS out. I chose to separate from Active Duty and join the Reserve where I could be more politically active when not on duty, and wrote another bulletin that backed up everything I had written with facts. Two years later, just about everything I said has come to pass. But I got labeled a “racist” and a “hate-monger” because I didn’t drink the Obama kool-aid.

The biggest problem they had is that I named the bulleting as a sarcasm to the whole Rev Wright thing: “Rev Wright must be right, GD America” because I was pissed over 2008 results.

I never did get an answer has to who got the bulletin and brought it to the workplace even though I demanded to know. What little sources I have indicate that a poster for DU happened to work in the same Government Agency as me and might have had something to do with it, because portions of my bulletin got posted out there.

Oh well, it’s water under the bridge because I was right. I am proud of the fact that I went “Tea Party” prior to that being made a routine term.

If anyone has been dumb enough to give their correct names, information and pictures on the Internet, then who would want to hire people that dumb anyway?

It’s one thing to put a resume out there, it is another to put enough out there to get robbed of your bank accounts and livelihood.

I see a problem here that can be readily resolved with a single lawsuit. What I write, or you write, or anyone writes is COPYRIGHTED. All you have to do is assert your right to put it in play legally.

So, this company is going to do a "collected works" of everything you wrote on the net and SELL THAT INFORMATION TO A PROSPECTIVE EMPLOYER.

Seems to me that's a commercial use of someone else's property (your words with copyrights), and you can't ordinarily do that without a release from the owner.

RightHaven is probably pretty hungry about now but this looks like low hanging fruit for that bunch of smarm merchants.

“If you use fake names on your social networking sites, how would they know it’s you?”

Only if you disclose your pseudonym, if any, or even use a social networking site. Other than that the employer would have to obtain your IP address to trace back postings to you. That would be unlikely.

If you do like Facebook etc. maintain 2 accounts one of which is squeaky clean and is used in effect as a virtual resume.

Think before post. Case in point the rioters in Vancouver whose Facebook antics came back to bite them.

The "firm" certainly makes it's officers, owners, managers and employees targets for violence.

It's one thing to collect information on people, and it's quite another to tell folks what you are up to!

It is, fundamentally, a very stupid idea.

Several years ago I had a screen capture of a Technorati search result frozen by ATT/Yahoo! (they received the e-mail through my local ISP)

Nothing illegal, nothing obscene, nothing classified; but none the less it was frozen. I received an e-mail several days later stating not to resend my message (I already had through another e-mail account) that my message was being “held for testing”. I responded with “Testing for what and by whom?” and got no response.

Welcome to the Brave New World. And this was prior to Obozo being sworn in. hee hee hee

The goal appears to be to keep the truth from being told. I may be wrong in this assessment and the actual goal may be to only subjugate the entire population to a particular individual’s will and authority, and it has nothing to do with the truth being told. One thing noticed is opinions are not welcome in some parts of netland. Strange times.

This is one of the fruits of the job market being so bad.

Employers can pretty much do whatever they want to employees because in many cases the employee can’t leave.

Mandatory wellness programs, 24 hour support, etc are all in the future. (or present for some).

Truth

and the web.

It is simple. Totalitarians all must lie to gain power and maintain it. No informed electorate would quietly go under the heel of oppression.

That is where the “MSM” comes in, to practice disinformation to the point that the electorate is so poorly informed they will vote for their own subjection.

I have a book in my library called:

“Rockets Red Glare: when America goes to War” by Richard J. Barnet /Publication Date: 1990

ISBN 10: 0671633767 / 0-671-63376-7

ISBN 13: 9780671633769

In that book is a statement that I found profound.

“To market official truth so at variance with reality or to engineer consent to policies that mock American values government must now so thoroughly misinform the public as to poison the wellspring of Democracy”

Totalitarians = Socialists/Marxists/Fascists/Communists/Dictators

All Lie

All steal

All kill the human spirit and will

None create anything only destroy things.

All are evil....

There's another bill up for consideration in Congress that provides further protection for music companies. Maybe we should get a friendly Congress-critter to propose an amendment that allows US, the general public, to tap into the Justice Department to go out and do battle with data miners who tap our personal property that's on the net somewhere.

Remember, just because it's on someone else's server, that doesn't mean they own the copyright.

Some government agencies are really not in agreement. Treasury has folks out looking for folks preparing to counterfeit money, so what you do in your own time could be unlawful. You're not, BTW, doing anything like that, right?

Yep, the “hate crime” lawyers are going to be there to “advise” the firms to take us out the loop.... not that their vision of butt honor is admirable either. I find it weird that firms would vouch for people crapping on their employees by the f@gs once they declare themselves homosexual, but, what do we know, it’s supposed to bring up pride and confidence when someone craps on your employee or when your employee does it like Obama.
