Walker (WI) Budget Gives School District Surplus, Reduces Class Sizes, Hires More Teachers
Legal Insurrection ^ | June 30, 2011 | Matthew Knee

Althouse:

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports:

Cost savings from worker contributions to health care and retirement, taking effect today as part of the new collective bargaining laws, will swing the Kaukauna School District from a $400,000 budget deficit to an estimated $1.5 million surplus….  The district… plans to hire teachers and reduce class size.Let’s stop and think of all the protesters who carried signs asserting that their opposition to Scott Walker was for the children.

Preposterous! Surely she cannot mean that lower labor costs per worker might free up money to hire more!  What next, claims that increasing the minimum wage kills jobs?  That much of the money lost to unionization is eventually recouped at the expense of consumers?

And, get this? The national teachers union is going to give the 14 Democrat state senators who fled Wisconsin their highest award. So if you run away from your elected duties because the teachers union isn’t happy, you get the gold plate or whatever. Of course, the unions are suing as well. So the thugs continue whining in Wisconsin.

Like all communist/socialist institutions, unions aren’t for anyone but the people who run them.

Of course, the unions are suing as well.

Walker should offer to work to rescind the law to settle the lawsuit. Of course, he will need to remind everyone that the surpluses, extra teachers, etc. will be going away if he agrees. Then, ask the people who they support: him and the Repubs or the Unions and Dems?

Let's see how that plays on the evening news.

I like the way you think!

There’s a link from the note in the Journal Sentinel to the original article in the PostCrescent. They also implemented $300,000 in merit pay, to be awarded at the discretion of the school board.

I think the “she” is in reference to Prof. Ann Althouse (”Althouse”). They didn’t link to the original piece she wrote, so hence, I didn’t either.

The people should countersue. Say that until grades go up, there will be no salary increases.

Treat them like they treat CEO’s from failing companies.

That will shut them up.

With such wisdom flowing from your keyboard, I’m tempted to believe you are sitting in the deer stand right now.

If so, I hope you brought a snack. Bow season is still a couple months out.

Actually, I might be in the woods doing some stand maintenance this weekend. I had some of my best work-related ideas while on stand last year. Those ideas are now being implemented on our new projects. And I shot the buck of my life (10pt 160+) the mount of which I might pick up after fishing Saturday.

Ahhhh.... Wisconsin!

I hate to be a wet blanket, but don't think for a split second that a lot of teachers wouldn't pad their students' grades just to get a raise.

Why not return the newly projected surplus to the taxpayers? Instead, the school district focuses on hiring more unionized agitators.

“I hate to be a wet blanket, but don’t think for a split second that a lot of teachers wouldn’t pad their students’ grades just to get a raise.”

So they would do exactly what they didn’t want to do with No Child Left Behind.

Bush’s fault!

Not quite...any government entity, even a school board, will still spend whatever revenue it has..if they now have a $ 1.5 mill surplus...put $ 500k into a reserve fund, and LOWER school taxes next year..even a few dollars per household..
