Medford, Ore. (AP) -- Rangers and others at Crater Lake National Park spent about six hours rescuing a New York man who slid 300 feet into the remains of a volcano that forms the nation's deepest and clearest lake.

Authorities describe the man as 27, from New York, and say his injuries were serious. He wasn't identified.

Witnesses said he was with friends Monday, went beyond a barrier onto a snow bank at an overlook, fell headfirst and slid partway down the 700-foot wall toward the lake.

There is still a LOT of snow up there. My family was visiting the park when this all went down.

Last place I’d want to be is hanging over the rail of a 20-foot high wall at a stadium.. maybe safety belts need to be installed. :-)

Yep, I drove up there for 4th of July weekend so that I could ride the loop around the crater. The road was still closed due to snowpack.

The guy should be given a bill for the cost of the rescue team + 10% for general stupidity.

This is why I stay home on weekends. The city morons walk around like zombies at places they should not be and can be dangerous to ones health.

Too bad they couldn’t turn it into a money making thing.. install bungy cords and towers or just long tether ropes so climbers and head first divers can anchor safely, make ‘em sign a waiver and let ‘em jump for dough! ;-)

There’s been one or two reports of drownings a week here. There’s going to be more if the idiot city-folk weekend neighbors keep diving head first into the river. But I’d get bad mouthed if I stated the obvious to them so I just keep the phone close ready to call 911 when they’re doing their stupid human tricks.

I hope he guy heals up, but I never mess around with heights. Stay behind the barrier unless you are some experienced rock climber or have the balance of a tight rope walker.

What a maroon.

I am surprised he did not make it all the way to the lake. I assume he slid on snow most of the way.
