McConnell: Not a single Republican will vote to raise debt limit (Then don't pass anything)
cbs ^ | 7/14/2011 | Stephanie Condon

President Obama is still trying to hash out a deficit reduction deal as part of a Congressional vote to raise the debt ceiling, but Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell suggested today that the president ultimately won't get any Republicans to work with him.

"I bet there won't be a single Republican vote to raise the debt ceiling at the end of the day," McConnell said in an interview with conservative talk radio host Laura Ingraham. The remark was in response to Ingraham's reference to a new Gallup poll showing that the plurality of Americans oppose raising the debt ceiling.

Mr. Obama and his economic team have warned of "economic catastrophe" should Congress fail to raise the debt ceiling by Aug. 2. Republicans, calling it irresponsible to raise the debt limit without fiscal reform, have insisted on massive spending cuts in exchange for their votes.

McConnell told Ingraham that there's no question the debt ceiling will be raised somehow. "If anybody seriously doubts that the U.S. is going to renig on its credit for the first time in history -- that's just not going to happen," he said.

Furthermore, the Senate leader said he's still interested in reaching a deal with the president "that cuts spending and makes a difference for the country."

However, McConnell said, Mr. Obama's interest in including revenue increases in the deal has left Republicans with two bad choices: "either sign onto a bad deal that raises taxes or go into default and allow us to have co-ownership of a bad economy."

McConnell acknowledged that the "back-up" plan he unveiled yesterday comes down largely to a political move. The plan would allow Mr. Obama to raise the debt limit without any Republican support.

“going to renig on its credit”

I wonder whether the author and her editor are really this stupid?

Ok, what? Yesterday he wanted to abdicate responsibility and give Obama a blank check. Today he says not a single Republican will vote to raise the debt ceiling. But the debt ceiling will be raised.

I think he's losing his mind. How about he goes somewhere else to have his nervous breakdown and let someone with a spine take over?

The House should pass a bill with REAL cuts equal to the amount of increase and tell the Senate and Obama to take it or leave it.
The GOP won't have to own it if Obama and the Rats reject it.

This whole thing sucks. If a deal isn’t made, Republicans will get blamed. I know that the Democrats don’t want to do anything but raise taxes and spend, spend, spend.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of the American people will probably side with whomever the media decides to blame.....and that will be the GOP.

We can’t afford another Obama term. Hell, I’m not convinced this poor nation will make it through the first four.

I sure wish we had an honest media this country.

He's trying to bamboozle us into thinking that giving Obama all the power (by a vote) will negate his responsibility of a debt ceiling vote.

What a transparently sleazy, corrupt form of politics: vote for a plan that means you don’t have to vote for the ceiling increase—because Obama can do it without Congressional approval.

(He only needs 1/3 of Congress, all Dems to enable him and he could simply veto the defense cuts that he himself proposes.)

If the GOP will get blamed anyway then they have more incentive to just do what's right.

At every press conference they need to remind the MSM how the Rats and Obama shoved Obamacare down American’s throats without negotiations.

mcconnell thinks we are stupid.

If the congress critters give the one the right to raise the debt limit without their voting for it and then expect us to believe that because they vote against the raise {but it still happens} that we won't blame them.

mcconnell has been in DC too long.

It is sleazy. The House needs to vote on a bill with equal cuts to increase and force the Senate Rats and Obama to make their own decision.

They will figure out how to hoodwink Americans, like they did on the 'continuing resolution.' Promise one thing, deliver a another.

Just wait for weeks of sustained propaganda and lies by Obama and his piss-stream media wankers. The GOP wants to starve the poor people and use them for fertilizer! And, we've got to punish those private-jet owners!

We shall see....

To most normal Americans say cutting gov't spending by roughly 25% is the only 'real' thing to do.

How about he is negotiating. This is a classic way to negotiate especially when you have the upper hand. One day you will appear to give in to your opponent. The next day you will say that you never agreed to what you said the day before.

If you pay careful attention, Obama has been doing the same. You will read that he is open to entitlement cuts. Then in a subsequent story you will read that he will not consider entitlement cuts.

Both sides are trying to psych each other out. That is what is going on. You are falling for it hook, line and sinker.

What Obama does not know is how far MCConnell is willing to push. If he psych him out properly Obama will cave.

That is the dynamic here.

If you repubic scum leadership drones raise the debt ceiling in any way at all... you sink your party for good. I despise you people almost as much as I despise the rats... and that is some fierce dislike... let me tell you!

1) They will raise the debt ceiling... whether it is through some political trickery or slight of hand or through outright capitulation.

2) The media will paint obama as a centrist and great leader.

3) obama will surge back up in the polls. (He already has... check rasmussen).

4) obama will win 4 more years of destruction and communist expansion.

Get ready for a third party... it is a slim chance but it may be our ONLY chance... if the republicrats perform the Final Sellout.

We have to get beyond the “blame game”. We have to sit back and look at the what the results do to help or harm our economy. Once that is visualized, then people will understand the value of of the politics played out.

You will see the truth soon... but it will be too late. These people do not deserve the faith that you put into them... did you like the last continuing resolution? You are about to receive the Nuclear version.

Yep. They’ve got a strong majority in the House, and still they act like the beat-down minority party they were a few decades ago. Instead of negotiating with Biden and then crying for Obama to enter the discussions (how’s that working out for them?) they should have simply passed their own bill and let it move on to the Democrats in Senate and Obama.

All that work we all did to get the undeserving GOP Party back into the House majority and they blow it—over and over again.

(Remember this spring when they tried to make us believe that $300M in cuts was $100B in cuts—when $100B in cuts would have been a drop in the bucket of a $1.5T deficit?)

Chances are very high.
