Obama: Americans back me on debt deal
CBS News ^ | July 15, 2011 | Brian Montopoli

President Obama on Friday pointed to polls to argue that his proposal of a "balanced approach" on a debt deal - one that includes revenue increases as well as spending cuts - is what the American people want.

"My Republican friends have said that they're not willing to do revenues, and they have repeated that on several occasions," he told reporters at a news conference in Washington. "My hope, though, is that they're listening not just to lobbyists or special interests here in Washington, but they're also listening to the American people. Because it turns out, poll after poll, many done by your organizations, show that it's not just Democrats who think we need to take a balanced approach, it's Republicans as well."

A Gallup poll released Wednesday found that only 20 percent of Americans support a deal that only includes spending cuts, something Republicans have insisted on. Another 30 percent wanted a deal that was "mostly" spending cuts, and 32 percent wanted a deal split equally between spending cuts and tax increases. Eleven percent favored a deal that was mostly or all tax increases.

"The clear majority of Republican voters think that any deficit reduction package should have a balanced approach and should include some revenues," Mr. Obama said. "That's not just Democrats. That's the majority of Republicans." (That Gallup poll found that only one in four Republicans favor a deal that is only spending cuts.)

Obama: 80% Of American People Want Higher Taxes As Part Of Deal

“You have 80% of the American people who support a balanced approach. 80% of the American people support an approach that includes revenues and includes cuts. So the notion that somehow the American people aren’t sold is not the problem. The problem is members of Congress are dug in ideologically.”

Why can’t people see him as the socialist that he is? When he talks about the Bush tax cuts that we couldn’t pay for, it sounds like he truly believes that he OWNS all of our income.

Please attempt to educate at least one democrat. My wife talks to about 10 of them daily and has been able to educate some of them on the basic of basics. Many seniors still think that republicans want to cut their social security and medicare. This is a PR war of truth.

Regardless of what the polls say, the Republicans are losing this debate in the public eye. Only when the Republicans continue to tell the truth, that Obama is a liar, that tax increases are NOT the solution but simply a way to allow Democrats to continue to spend on pet programs at the cost of every American and that, if Obama was SERIOUS about this, he would be able to point to specific cuts he's proposing.

We are losing this debate because our representatives continue to be scared of the result of telling the truth and holding the line.

If the GOP does NOT hold the line on Obama and his class warfare and FDR-esque approach to redistribution, the GOP, as we know it will be dead. THAT is what is seriously at risk!

Obama acts as it the 2010 election never happened. The Republican candidates ran against tax increases and for spending cuts and shellacked the Rats.

Nothing is stopping the people who favor tax increases from voluntarily sending more of their money to the federal government. Of course, they don’t want to pay more taxes themselves, they want someone else to pay more taxes.

I can’t tell if OBowbow is back on crack or just delusional. I listened to his Presser for a few minutes and its just surreal. He spouts this drivel and the reporters just sit there nodding their heads. Not a hard question ever asked. Its beyond belief.

FTA ...

“A Gallup poll released Wednesday found that only 20 percent of Americans support a deal that only includes spending cuts, something Republicans have insisted on. Another 30 percent wanted a deal that was “mostly” spending cuts, and 32 percent wanted a deal split equally between spending cuts and tax increases. A few questions:

Who commissioned the poll?

Specifically, what were the questions?

What are the demographics, e.g. likely voters?

This poll just doesn't pass the smell test with other polls claiming The Won would lose in an election vs. a generic Pub candidate.

Right, the 40-50% that don’t believe any tax increases will impact them are perfectly ok with “other people” being taxed more. Of course, they’re completely clueless, because they don’t understand that you can’t tax one group without it having an impact on all other groups. But, hey, it’s their little fantasy, and Bambi’s buying right in.
